Freud nude sells for new world record at auction
Posted 45 minutes ago
Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, a nude by British artist Lucian Freud, has sold for more than $US34 million ($A36.4 million) in New York, becoming the most expensive work ever by a living artist.
The Christie's sale busted the record held by Hanging Heart, by American artist Jef Koons, which fetched $US23.4 million at Sotheby's in New York late last year.
The 1995 oil painting of a corpulent woman curled naked and sleeping on a sofa was touted ahead of time as the headliner for Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art sales.

Freud, the 85-year-old grandson of pioneering psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, was born in Berlin but his family fled Germany as the Nazis rose to power and he became a British citizen.
A ‘masterpiece’ by Francis Bacon has sold for £43m at Sotheby’s New York, breaking the record for a work by the artist.
Triptych draws on Greek drama
Triptych, 1976, sold for $86.3m, beating the previous highest price for a Bacon work, the $52.7m (£27m) paid for Study For Innocent X.
The sale was part of the most lucrative night in Sotheby’s nearly 300-year history, as it took $362m (£186m) including commission.

Australia's top prize for religious art is again embroiled in controversy after its judges fell out over the inclusion of a work by controversial artist Adam Cullen.
Sydney academic Dr Christopher Allen has resigned from the Blake Art Prize judging panel in protest over Cullen's work being included on the shortlist.
The canvas shows Jesus Christ on the cross with the inscription "only women bleed".
The chairman of the Blake Art Prize, Reverend Rod Pattenden, says he and the other two judges - artist Lachlan Warner and religious scholar Kathleen McPhillips - respect Dr Allen's decision.. etc
Always loved the surrealist work of Salvador Dali
hi green.. I have sold works, some in the thousands, however, I love oil paint and glazing.
o boy - ... Maybe hang these two side by side on the wall of some barber shop, lol2020 glad to see your research.
Have a look at Artemisia Gentileschi a woman before her time. Taught by her father Orazio, raped by his best friend, married off and finally acknowledged by the English.
Her work is beautiful and not well known the aggression she takes in some paintings is reflective of what she was going through.
Caravaggio was awesome.green
thousands of religious paintings in those European museums of course ... seen one seen em all - although this one by Caravaggio was "different".
lolNot if it is a Plastic Surgeon Office!
