I've heard that there are men who pay good money for services such as you've described here. The whip bearer is usually female and clad in skintight black leather.

So maybe some of the mares find it erotic also, however, I somehow doubt that the geldings would experience the same level of enjoyment.

Still there are many worse occupations for a horse - I've heard that they do make excellent glue!

Well that's what you get for being over ambitious. Now, if you'd taken a more considered approach, started with a shetland pony and gradually worked your way up like all sensible humans do, you'd be running like a stallion now!
 
I've trained a few gallopers in my time. Did well, won races at Doomben, Eagle Farm, Flemington and Moonee Valley. One of my nags even held a course record at Moonee Valley for a time.

Part of my business now involves servicing the racehorse industry.

I did it differently to the average trainer, based on operant conditioning and interval training. They thought I was a nutter, but I had happy horses that did well and did not need the stick to run. My primary instruction to the jockey was to ride them out hands and heels... wave the whip around to satisfy the punters and the stewards but don't hit them.

A fit, sound horse does seem to enjoy it somehow. A horse that is happy with his lot is eager to be caught and is usually waiting at the gate to be exercised. It seems bizarre to humans, but it is a quirk of equine behaviour.

That said, there is a lot of deadsh!t trainers with miserable horses. If you love horses, a training track can be a stressful place to be as you must witness all sorts of crap inflicted on them. In some of these stables I would be the horse's only friend when I visit. Heartwrenching.

But the same can be said for any horse sport... dressage, showing, jumping, whatever.

As for jumps racing... I see the horses in between races, so I know how they are before and after. There are some good jumps trainers who also have happy horses, but certainly the injury rate is higher.

I saw a horse drop dead right in front of me at Moonee Valley as it jumped, that upset me a lot and the risk to the horses means I could never train my own horses for jumps racing.

Should it be banned? I don't know, but I think there should be penalties for racing an under-prepared horse IMO.

On the other hand, there is nothing like a champion racehorse... nothing.

(I think I have cognitive dissonance on this issue )
 
Wow, I am impressed Wayne.

I saw a documentary on training horses and how the punishment aspect is not needed. The trouble is that traditions date over centurys and take a lot of time to break down.

For the others, whip use has decreased. It is padded, not allowed to be used on adjacent strides and I think limited to 7 times? You probably know Wayne.

My dream is to get a racehorse, I will do it once the kids grow up.

I owned a pacer (trotter) once, to see the effort that horse expended voluntarily was quite amazing to me.

When on the training track, if we just let him run to have a loosen up he would go around a few times OK by himself, not exerting himself but enjoying it. As soon as another horse came on the track they would be eyeing each other off and if one caught up to the other you could see the glint in the eye and you would then need to restrain them as they wanted to race each other.

At the actual races the nervous excitement was clearly noticeable in quite a few horses, they were busting to get out there and let rip.

I knew a gallop trainer as well and he had a horse that they could only race at their home track, 500M from the stable. As soon as they washed him in preparation for a race he would start getting very edgy and excited so they had to wash him then walk him straight down to the track as late as possible.

In the stall for a bit and then onto the track, we used to go and check how he was before backing him, made quite a bit of money from him as he was so unreliable

Sometimes favourite, take him to the track a bit early and he was exhausted by race time, a good price and take him down as late as possible and there you go !!

When I used to punt a bit I found it very helpful to concentrate on a few stables and their habits, think like the trainer and I found my winners improved.

Love it and have been fortunate enough to be involved with a dozen or so gallopers.
I don't know why these so called do gooders protest about jumpers & horse racing in general. Benefits Entertainment and employment. Most people involved within the industry care more about the horses than you do. You probably feed them to your pussy cats inadvertently.
Horses love competing against each other. Come race day they get just as excited about it as we do and if they didn't enjoy you would soon know and the horse would be out in the paddock. What's the difference between a horse or a human involved in a dangerous sport and loving it? Just ask Mr Ed he'll tell ya.

By the way the title above states " Anyone here love horse racing?"
 

Us "do-gooders" dont find a death rate of 1 in 22 acceptable, you might but the MAJORITY of the public dont.

In a recent poll 77% of those that responded want jumps racing banned.

As for the benefits, explain to me what's entertaining about a horse snapping its neck, or leg?

Employment? The jumps industry is less that 1% of the entire racing industry and there are NO fulltime trainers that only have jumpers, Only around 40 jumps jocks (that only race ride 6 months of the year and suppliment their incomes with either highweight races or riding trackwork)

And your final point. The MAJOR differences between humans and animals competing in sports are

a) Humans have a choice, these horses dont
b) When was the last time, you saw the green screen bought out at an Essendon v Collingwood game?

Don't mind a day out at the track, especially when the big guns come out.

The sprinter scene in Australia is as good as I remember. Having Foxwedge and Buffering pushing Hay List, who is obviously behind to Black Caviar but seems to be getting better and better.

Then having others, not quite as proven like Rain Affair and Bel Sprinter along with the young up and comer Seepoy and its pretty interesting to see them go!

Unfortunately Frankel and Black Caviar won't race over 1400 over at Royal Ascott, but looks like Hay List may take on Rocket Man at the Krisflyer and Seepoy is heading to Dubai before Black Caviar and Hay List look to do battle down the long straight at Royal Ascott. What an international invasion Australia has in store if it all goes to plan in the sprinting world!

(a)I gather you haven't spoken to Mr Ed yet?
What would the MAJORITY of votes be in favour of if it were contained to those only involved within the industry? (The ones that know what they were on about).
(b)The last time i saw the screen brought out was in a game of rugby union except there was no green screen coming out just men wearing green that put him in an ambulance. Sad he left behind a young family but he loved the sport and took the risks as we all do. I guess in your eyes Rugby union is a gentlemans sport played by animals therefore they dont have a say the in the matter and we should vote on their poor dumb asses playing also.
ANYWAY getting back to the original title of who loves horse racing.
