American businesswoman thrown in jail in Saudi Arabia

You obviously haven't read the article. He isn't advocate nutty Taliban style rules, he is talking about the use of some concepts of sharia law in divorce settlements.

Hardly dragging an entire country back to the 6th century

I actually did read the article, even though it is obvious to you that I didnt. I stand by my statement that the archbishop is a nutter, and his brother is probably another....

I dont think I am alone in criticising him, even members of his own synod think he should resign.

And it is 6th century stuff. Why should one mob have 6th century divorce laws, and the rest have 21st century laws? It's divisive. Anyway, it would just be the thin end of the wedge. No, one law for everyone.

Seems that this thread has morphed a bit. And the religous police (and anywhere else for that matter) in saudi are still disgusting excuses for human beings.

Maybe entering refugee should sign up to obey local laws or be sent to other places that he or she will feel more at home.
Maybe immigration should have the same requirement.

One knowledgable academic mentioned that multiculturalism always failed, if true we are sitting on the time bomb, question is what will be the primer?

Two laws into one land does not go.

What happens if woman wants divorce settled in normal system (cause she knows she will be treated more fairly) and man wants divorce settled using Sharia law (cause he knows he is going to get a better result).

Then there would need to be a court case to decide which law should decide the divorce case. Then there would need to be a court case to decide which court decides on which court can decide which law should decide the divorce.

Then there are appeals of course all the way through - yep sounds like a great system - especially for lawyers.

hehe I can just imagine what would happen if a minority group tried to introduce Sharia or similar here

Would be interesting..

Perhaps a quick look at what happened in Fiji in '86 (The original coup) and then again a number of years later, and the reaction it received from other nations might well be interesting to those that think it couldn't happen here..

Never say never..

Buster

Hmmm.. Yes I totally agree with you.. It surprises me that the US, with the 'War against Terror' has not tried harder to reduce it's dependence on oil that is largely derived from the 'Middle East'.. Surely if you reduce the requirement for thier commodity, to the point that it is almost worthless, you will win the race.. It won't happen until we can power Warships/Bombers/Tanks on something other than oil, and it certainly won't happen whilst the 'Bush' (read Oil Family) are sitting in the hot seat..

So here we go again.

If these people are smart enough to be able to attend university, how come they just dont seem to get it that (most) of our institutions are secular. Bugger them, why should everyone else have to pander to their 6th century religious peculiarities. I dont care if they are full fee paying students (and this is another good reason why k07 should seriously think about dumping full fee paying places at universities). If they say the will not come because universities will not re-arrange timetables and provide facilities to suit this minority, then tell someone who cares. I certainly dont, in fact I would rather they stayed on some other part of the planet.

Hey if they want to go and pray, then fine, I dont care. Why re-arrange lectures though? Havn't these people heard about photocopiers yet? If I look back at my lecture notes they are full of photocopies. Too much surfing - in the water idiot, not on the net. In fact I remember one half unit in 4th year that I did not even attend a single lecture, and I think I still got a "B".
