I think 2x 22" may be better.. as you can allocate the two different monitors more appropriately. One may display say your trading platform, and another say the forums, or general web browser as you do your research. I definitely find it invaluable to split it this way rather than clicking all the time to switch between.

24" are coming down significantly, and '24" will be the new 22"' in the coming 12 months I think.

Unfortunately, nearly all the 22" monitors you see are only 6 bit, so the have to dither to achieve a full 16million colour palette. Some are better than this than others.

I am have for the last few years used BenQ LCD's. They are quite cheap, quite reliable. Picture quality would be classed as fine for desktop use, but probably not so for graphic design or high quality video.

If you wish to spend a bit more, you'll probably find colour reproduction better with the Samsungs. But the Samsungs can vary, as they are now trying to drop costs to compete with the cheaper BenQ's, Acer, Asus, LG's of this world.

To be honest, like many things these days, they are becoming much of a muchness for features amongst most brands -- however your best judge is your own eye. The likes of Office Works often will allow you to compare the quality between several different screens in front of you, and decide which appeals to you.
 
agree with gfresh .... 2 x 22" would be great ... but if you are going to look long term the 24" would be magic ... if you have the available space to fit them in. Also take into consideration how long you are going to be staring into them.

I am inclined to look at Dell or LG ... have seen the 22" & seem very good.

Worth a look and compare with other brands. If you time it well, Dell have some very good offers from time to time ... so keep your eyes on their "specials" adverts.

also, the Sunday computer swap meets (if they are held in your city) are great places to get competitive prices ... but make sure you know who you are buying from. Have bought computer hardware, networking gear etc with backup warranty and great value for $.
 
I have a basic Dell 24" which cost $499 + $49 for an extended warranty. It works fine. Only minor thing is it has a slight reddish cast when next to my laptop screen, but not enough to make me adjust one or the other. In isolation I don't notice it.

Dell currently has it on special at $499 again (ends today) as well as a package (with headphones) for the ultrasharp at $799

The ultrasharpmakes a difference on my 17" notebook, but I don't think it will be as neccessary for the 24". Major differences are contrast and the amount of peripheral ports (HDMI only available on ultrasharp), as well as the swivel/adjustable stand.

I'm happy with the monitor as is.

I've two of the dell 24's...they are a great monitor.

They currently have the 27's on special for $999, I'd go for one of those.

from a practical point of view ... what size desk you using for the 24's?
so one 27 would replace 2 x 24? .... you consider that a better setup (for your specific purpose off course)?
 
the problem with the 27inch dell screens are that they dont have all the inputs that the 24inch model has - like HDMI. Though you can get around that with DVI to HDMI adapters.

The main difference between the 24inch and the ultrasharp 24inch is the contrast ratio 1000:1 compared to 3000:1.

What are your main uses for the screen? 24inch are good for work and play.
27 would be too big for work, especially if your sitting up close for it.
 
Both the 24 and 27 inch monitors have a maximum native resolution of 1920x1200 - basically 2 A4 sheets of paper side by side on the 24".

The 27" might be a better bet if my eyesight deteriorates, but I don't see a lot of value in it over the 24" for most use. Larger image if using for movie playback, or gaming but you don't get any more real estate, just larger text/images.

If you need more screen space the 30" is probably the way to go, but then you need to have a decent graphics card (my laptop won't push higher than 1920x1200for example, so you need to consider the possible additional costs in going to a larger monitor for screen real estate).
 
Well it looks like the 'sweet spot' right now is the Dell 2408WFP 24'' Ultrasharp.

Dell have 3 'packages' going at the moment, depending on if you go into the home/office or small business sections -

$849 - with Sennheiser headset, MS Sidewinder mouse and HDMI cable
$799 - with Kingston 2GB flash drive and HDMI cable
$799 - with Sennheiser headset

I figure it's like $400 on a monitor & $400 on a True HD TV all in one unit (and tax deductible ). Run it alongside my current 19" LCD.

My employer has a deal with Dell so may also get a further discount I hope. See how we go .

No I'd get twin 27's if was to start again. Productivity is so much better with more than one monitor.
 
my graphics guy up here has a great setup, he has a main 30" monitor with 2 x 22" monitors above.
I have always wanted to try this for trading.
The 30" allows him to have 2 windows open side by side which are sized to a good workable area, you could possibly open more I don't know.
I also think they are also run by two networked computers 1 running the 30" & 1 running the 2 x 22".

The 24" monitors are a good size we use these in the office (singles only).
So my vote is go for the 24's

wow, i think it might be time to upgrade my 15inch CRT and 17inch LCD. I would agree with bentrod, having two monitors is a very good advantage. going back to using a single screen setup after using two monitors feels horrible
 

Actually I'm not fussed on Dell at all generally, it's just that they sometimes make a killer LCD monitor, and I think they have it in the 2408. The above models look to be the cheaper spec TN panels, so you will get what you pay for.

Future proofing for just a little bit more ie if you think you will want to watch blue ray movies eg full HD then you need a 1:1 selectable screen res and maybe a HDMI port. I would want/need something of a higher qaulity with better connectivity.

To that end and in my research, there is a deal happening as follows for the Dell 2408 (till Thurs 26.06)

Dell 2408 + 2GB Memory stick + delivery + 5 years warranty = $675

Take note no HDMI-DVI cable provided.

PM me if interested and I will give you the details.

There is a proviso in that there will be a new revision out soon, which maybe might remedy some of the niggling minor? problems with this model. I would buy it now but I'm in no hurry - I can get the next version by waiting a few weeks, which could be why the 'special' is on at the moment ie to clear these old, but still functional versions??

I would certainly steer well clear of anything LG.

As for the others, they both have 1000:1 contrast ratio.

LCD's inability to produce blacks is bad enough without a 1000:1 ratio.


The Dell 24's produce a very good image and with a contrast ratio of 3000:1, they do blacks better than any other LCD I have seen.

Chaps @ Overclockers seem to like em too.

Go for a 30" most of the time you only look at 1 monitor the others are for extra stuff.

What are the ones on the side of the Dell 30?

22's mounted vertically?
 
Yep. In this config the resolution match the height of the Dell and I can get lots of info in them that doesn't require me to turn at right angles to see the outside screens.

Very nice indeed. What model is the 30" and are you happy with it? Is it just the photo or shadow on the far right screen or does it have a dark spot?

That shadow is just the google widget that is displayed on the right side.

Uncle I can not tell you how much I like this screen, Dell 30". A quick look at dell.com.au mine looks the same specs but no HDMI input and I got it $600 cheaper because of that I guess.

It really is magnificent. All the room in the world to have lots of charts that aren't all squashed up and right in front of you. With multi monitors, especially two, the screen edges are right in your line of view. I always suspected that 90% of the time I look at one spot of the monitor and the monitor edges are a barrier for your eyes to jump over so decided to go as big as I could to get as much in the one monitor as I possible. Very happy I did.
