10k into Mutual Funds?

Greetings.
So I have 10k saved up and I am unsure where to invest it. I've heard that a Mutual fund will be a better option, than a Bank CD.
It will most likely only be a short-term (2year investment). As I may decide to whack a deposit down for a house,
I'm a complete n00b when It comes to investments, so your help would be much appreciated.
