10 point employment standards and unemployment

Anything that improves work/life balance has to be a good thing - Australians are close to the hardest working nation in the world, and we are 2nd on the global unpaid overtime list.

Provided it does not increase the compliance burden on SMEs I'm all for the changes.

we are 2nd on the global unpaid overtime list.

I had a flat tyre changed by an RACQ serviceman today. He said a couple of weekends ago (when we had 200mls of rain in 36 hours) he worked non stop 22 hours. Was paid for 8 hours.

When I asked him why he did it, he replied that "someone has to look after the customers, and the young blokes won't work weekends."

I notice dramatic shift in employees integrity, loyalty, work ethics.

All "high horse" and mostly foreign concepts for ME, I, MINE, FOR ME generation.

That is a sad reply.

Perhaps you would like to look at the social consequences of mothers working.

You have understand something. To bring up a person from the age of 0 - 18 it 'WILL' cost at least $300,000. If people are going to need help because they cant afford just 4 months. Maybe they should ask themselves if they can afford to have children.
My sister is 30 years old and even she agrees with the fact that women are going to shot themselves in the foot if paid maternity leave is put forward.

And the thing with Europe. They do have maternity, cheap child care and 35 hour weeks. But they also don't have leave loading, overtime pay, and no sick pay.

i think its fair enough though. companies no longer have any loyalty to employees so why should a worker care about the company. i worked for a multinational and saw how they operated, bs excuses for why you can't get a payrise (even to meet inflation) then circle jerk emails about stock options and pay packets for executives. then when technology allows ship the job off to india.

i don't know about trades and blue collar professions, but for white collar its do whats best for you because the company sure as hell isn't going to.

as for the whole "generation" of MEism, kids pick up what their parents teach. older people moralising about the youth of today are reaping what they sow. consumerism, trash media and instant gratification are what they learnt watching tv, watching their parents, watching society.

Im a tradesman (Boilermaker) and work for a mulitnational company and yes its the same deal for us.
Our manufacturing jobs are going to Inda too. And their workmanship is crap to say the least!

A few things to add. YES...Im glad to see the workchoices (or slavelabour) abolished.
As a tradie, ive always been under the impression that if your on a salary, then you either get a higher pay rate or some type of bonus scheme. Now I know this isn't true for all!
The thought of having my overtime rate stripped from me with nothing to make up the difference in lost pay was a bs idea. And I quite simply would probably have told them where to stick their O/T if they wanted me to work any.
Thats why i think chefs etc get the rawest deal in the working world.

As for the baby issue...well my girlfriend is 34yrs old. So in her eyes running out of time for kids.
How do people pay for morgages etc on only one income these days?? You cant! You have to pop a child out and get straight back to work whilst someone else raises your child Monday to Friday.
**Unless you already have a house that you have lowered your repayments on and has good equity in it now**

Even rent is wiping out any money your able to save these days as it keeps going up and up.

Now I admit, I dont have children and I don't own a house...because we cant afford either yet. Which i guess is a whole new issue.
No kids means more skilled immigrants come in which means my pay stays where it is.
Sounds like a vicious circle lol.

we're just suffering the effects of globalisation, which was enabled by the free market and technology. for some reason no one even wonders why we are blindly charging down the path of "sustained growth", and its like concepts of sustainability or managed population growth or community management don't even exist.

go nuke are you in sydney? you don't have to stay here, trades are in demand the world over. globalise yourself. or move up / down the coast to somewhere you won't have to grind your middle ages away in traffic, overtime and taxes.

No Disarray I'm in Brisbane.

My girlfriends got a good job here thats she has just got a promotion in and is happy with.

I wouldn't pull her away from that. She enjoys her work more so than myself.

I'm looking for fly in/ out work, but its proving very, very difficult to find. Even with 10yrs as a qualified Boilermaker!

Indeed we can't sustain our out of control population on this planet can we.

I'm doing my bit so far:)

Perhaps we need another World War or Black Plague to cull the population.

Not that I would like to see my loved ones die! :(
