We are travelling around Australia, in a free camp out side Mt Isa I found a camera, looking at the photos we believe it belongs to a couple driving a white Toyota van, rego no is AU65VE, the number plate looks to be NSW. Can anyone help us locate the owner.Looking at the photos we think a retired couple with small dog.

The police will find them.

I have friend who has a friend who frequents a number of RV travelling forums and he will post there. He will also ask if the number plate is a member of a +30,000 membership club. I will let you know if there is any response.

Police have access to the transport department database and can quite easily track down the owner of any registered vehicle (or previously registered vehicle if the rego has expired).

So I'd hand it to the nearest police station along with the vehicle rego details and where you found it etc. I'm not sure of the exact rules, but if they can't find the owner and it's not claimed after a certain period of time then I'm pretty sure they'll hand it back to you (at which point it is legally yours to keep).

Obviously the police. Don't attempt to find the owner yourself or put the find up on any websites devoted to travellers.

It's not your responsibility and you never know what potential ramifications may result in doing anything other than handing it to the police.

Thanks, it's all the photos that they will want.

Excellent advice. What if they had reported it as a theft? You may end up having to prove you found it, which I assume is what most people accused of theft will claim if found in possession of stolen property. Pop it into your nearest police station and let them take care of it.
