Laptop Sale!

Re: EOFY Laptop Sale

In the interest of trolling let me introduce these tablets:

A windows 7 tablet with a intel i5 cpu, this tablet basically is a notebook. Check out the video to see what you can do in microsoft office with this tablet when combined with the provided wacom digitizer(pen). Basically you can write on the tablet as if it was a piece of paper.

A more rugged tablet. The guy in the video does good reviews.

These tablets are for productivity whereas the ipad is for entertainment.

Waiting is also a option, some reviews on the samsung suggest that it is quite flimsy and in some cases the screen isn't attached well. Maybe next year or earlier there will be windows 8 tablets like the two examples designed for productivity, and samsung may have improved on their tablet to make it at least as rugged as the ipad.

The fact that these machines exist in my mind pretty much obsoletes the laptop, unless you want the keyboard. You can get the samsung package which comes with a separate keyboard anyway, then again carrying two separate items might not be the same as carrying one laptop. The other factor is that they cost a lot more than a laptop with equivalent specs. The wacom digitizer combined with touch screen really allows these things to do more than a notebook.

Re: EOFY Laptop Sale

Thanks lurker - I'm waiting to check out the MSoft 'Surface' tablet before I upgrade my tablet (have a cheapie Android at present). This Samsung is a contender too, looks great.

So, for the time being, still in the mkt for a bargain laptop. Seen some 2nd Gen i7 laptops around at a good price, Dick Smith had one for $595 last week - sold out really quickly.

Re: EOFY Laptop Sale

There is only one place to buy laptops IMO, grab a bargain from GraysOnline.com

Just about all the big brands sell reconditioned models on there (i.e. demo models, returns fixed as new etc.)... if you can tell it's not brand new you're doing well (absolutely nothing wrong with them) and they come with 12 months warranty too (there are 2nd hand ones - and factory seconds - for sale as well that obviously don't come with 12 months warranty etc. but they are clearly marked... it's the reconditioned ones you're after).

I picked up one of these a couple of months ago:

($1699 is the current price HN sell them for on the link above)

Fantastic machine, not too bad as a gaming laptop too (have been playing a bit of Diablo 3 and World of Tanks on it without any problems)... $460 delivered is all it cost me... can't complain about that :)

Since your waiting anyway, I would cross the samsung off your list. There are some negative reviews on the build quality of the samsung and how the screen isn't attached well. May as well wait for the second generation and see how the reviews pan out for the next iteration.

I'm waiting before buying a productivity tablet as well. It doesn't pay to be a early adopter. I prefer to wait till they perfect it a bit more. Hopefully Samsung can sort out the build quality to at least match the ipad in its next iteration.

For me personally when buying one of these productivity tailored tablets, I would make sure it has a proper PC processor from intel like a i3/i5 or i7. I don't think there is much point getting a windows 8 tablet without a proper processor, if I was to go that route, I would have just got a ipad. I think apple has pretty much got it right in terms of a entertainment tablet. Just the right size and weight for holding on your bed. So for me, a proper intel cpu is a must even if it has a lot less battery life, the tablet is for productivity not entertainment so I'm willing to give up the battery life for the speed of a proper computer. The other 2 must haves is the same microsoft OS that is on desktop PC's + a wacom digitizer pen. After its ticked all 3 boxes, I start reading the reviews.

As for a laptop, the big name stores like harvey norman are fine. There is hardly any difference in prices of laptops between stores, you may as well get it from a big name store like harvey norman so that you will have less hassles if something goes wrong. Not to mention their price match policy. If you find the same model cheaper somewhere else, you can still rock up to harvey norman and get them to price match.

If you don't mind refurbished , then have a look at this site which offers refurbished government puters.

Thanks all - some great resources here for those looking for trading laptops (or for any other purpose too, of course). Much appreciated.

I've changed the name of this thread, got rid of 'EOFY' (it might come back for a visit in mid-2013?)

Some great advice and links in this thread, thanks to all.
