Oprah Winfrey

I'm a big fan of Tolle. He knows what time it is (excuse my rap parlance).

Unfortunately, none of the audience nor Oprah herself seem to really get it. They just nod along demonstrably, as if to say "oh yes, wonderful!" Next thing you know they are in hysterics over receiving a new car.

Personally if there is someone you look up to, or wish to emulate, be they sports stars through to business people, it is always good to actually meet them and find out what they are like in person.

Of course they are no different to anyone else, but the fact that they have done something that you also wish to acheive, or done something you like, means you may be able to pick up some useful information from them.

Prawn, that's entirely reasonable, and there are many people I admire and respect. But this hysterical fan stuff is something quite different.

I'm not sure if Tolle knows the time at all, even "now". He was very dysfunctional and, in my opinion, has woven himself into his present position by picking up on the mindfulness theory / research / practices of others. With a modest literature background he has come to the very self-centred view that he is now a spiritual guide. I find his deliveries to be repetitive, fluffy and vapid. If you deconstruct his writings they are shallow - if not empty.

Still, each to his/her own. I am just offering a personal view. He is certainly successful as measured by book sales.

Yep, I'm with you on this, Twiddle. But then, if I try to be objective and quite fair, perhaps it's a good thing if she can get people to believe that if they can just believe in themselves and their capacity to achieve, then their lives will be more fulfilling and productive.

Don't know. I guess as a species we come in an extraordinary variety of sub-types.

The whole concept of being a fan of anyone or anything is beyond me. I hear presenters even on ABC Radio who are almost middle aged raving about how excited they are to meet X, Y or Z. They absolutely giggle in their adoration.
Are their own lives so unsatisfying that they so easily cast themselves into such a pathetic role?

I just don't get it at all.

Agreed. The adoration people give celebrities has always puzzled me.

There was an article in the AGE, voicing horror at Julia's appearance at the Oprah roadshow. The article was by one Peter Costello, and read (in part)-
........but one of our famous people who climbed on the bandwagon should not have been anywhere near the scene of the Opradulation. Julia Gillard is the prime minister of Australia. She is the person ultimately responsible for sending troops into battle. She is the one who must stand up and insist our country is treated with respect in international forums. She is not a support act for a visiting US celebrity. She didn/t do well here. In fact, it was cringe making...
