It is just a terrible misadventure and today very sad indeed.

If anything the second explosion justified the caution taken by the authorities and their recogniton of the danger to rescuers of anyone rushing in too quickly.

Plenty of time for recriminations later, right now, everybody is pretty sad and emotional.

I listen to talk-back radio during the day and there have been plenty of people openly wailing on air. Just a few minutes ago one of the sisters phoned in

I so feel for all who have lost their lives, their families, and the small community of Greymouth. The West Coast of the South Island is largely overlooked by the rest of the country, and - at least when I was still in NZ - to function about fifty years behind.

Like a lot of small places, it has a strong sense of community and I'd expect this will have an effect far more widely than the families.
