Just wondering if anyone here has any experience with sea kayaks. In particular expedition kayaks.

I have been thinking about kayaking from fraser island to the cape for some time and starting to look a bit deeper and see what sort of logistics are required.

One of the main things I am struggling to find info on is what sort of boat materials are best suited for my adventure. I note that most expedition kayaks are some form of composite material but wonder whether for my conditions (bashing into rocks and coral!) the roto-moulded polyethylene mighten be a bad option. The plastics seem to have come along way in there durability and I need something that could take a good whack or three. The boat would be fully laden (self sufficient) and I am a big nugget at 6"4 and 100kgs. I have been looking at the Valley Nordkapp.

I shall be visiting the boat store when I head down south in a few weeks possibly and would like to be a some what knowledgeable when I arrive.

I have recently taken up kayaking..not the coastal paddling kind ,but in rivers around SE Qld.

Not sure where you are located ,but ,if you are near (or in) Brisbane there is a Canoe Sales /Hire Place here in bris. The proprietor is very knowledgable about Sea Kayaking and has years of experience

Here is his website..he'd be chuffed to talk to a keen paddler such as yourself.

Congrats on your new hobby. I had a strange twist of events that have seen me move to Darwin for the time being so that has put a slight dent in my aspirations although I still have a burning desire to do the trip. I havent yet purchased my expedition craft but have 90% settled on the Valley Aquanaut HV for when the time becomes right! Its a bit more high volume for a big nugget like myself. ;) Just need all my ducks to line up now.
 
Thanks ..it is getting rather addictive!

The NT would have to be a great place to be for a Kayaker.One of my "Must do's" is a paddle up all eight gorges at Katherine

Have to be an overnighter..too much to see for just one day.

I got a couple of Hobies Kayaks with Mirage Drive I take them around where there is water, lakes, down the coast, rivers

fun to fish and kids love using it as platform to jump off in the middle of the river or ocean..

I spend as much of my spare time (mostly summer time) as I can kayaking and canoeing on the Murray and backwaters in South Australia. I lived on the Sunshine Coast for 6 years but it got too crowded for me and I missed the river down here, been back here for 18 years now. Paddling right on sunrise in summer down here is my passion. Not much of a "gear" person, paddling's just a way for me to be out on the river, I'd be just as happy floating down the river on a log ;)

Those Hobies are fantastic!I like the way the paddles move ..like penguin's they say.And the Tri Yak is awesome.

BUT ..I am more like captain black...very low tech.I started out on a log ,captain ,then found a bucket. :eek:

Much happier with my little Sea Kayak Frenzy.

I take a cool bag and have lunch afloat..it is just as much about meditation as sport or fitness..they all go hand in hand.

I love my Hobie! I've got an Outback. What an awesome bit of kit. Just for fishing and paddling around the harbour. Nice and short so it sits in my carspace in the basement (next to the car with a rec kayak sat on top. who said you can't have it all in a unit.)

Off to the whitsundays on a kayak trip in sept with the missus. Really looking forward to it. We will hire suitable kit there of course.

;) Has done the Huon River from near Judbury bridge, Judbury to the Grand Hotel in Huonville a few times.

Small blow up boat, small esky bag with a sixpack ,fruit, sunscreen, handline with a cupla lures and a book.

:D Float away 4-7 hours just drifting down in the current and catch a taxi back home after .

Misses the Huon Valley Tasmania.
 
Anyone know about the max capacity of them?

How close can you go to the capacity? or is it better if the max capacity is 90kg and youre 85kg to go up to a 100kg one?
 
Have never seen any maximum capacity in the specs for Kayaks

Probably more a case of what you can comfortably fit into.If one is over 190cm,then they would need a kayak with lots of legroom/adjustable footrests

If one is over 190kg ,they need to diet and work out first :D

Are you thinking of trying one out?
 
Yeah, have used friends ones in the past...im roughly 190cm tall so its just a matter of finding one with adequate leg room. I was looking online and all the websites had max capacity stats for their various ones.
