one wonders, with all the great minds in this country, why we suffer with poor leadership choices....

is the path to PM just too much trouble for most intelligent, free thinking individuals?

what are the steps involved with becoming PM, does one actually have to come up through the ranks of the political parties?

Alcopop tax.
Increased tobacco taxes.
Proposing to increase taxes on mining company profits.
Peter Garrett and the wasteful and poorly conceived ceiling insulation fiasco.
Wants to censor the internet.
Indecisive on asylum seekers and climate change.
Advocates earwax eating and throwing tantrums at air hostesses.

...and this:

Budgie smugglers.
Prude
Patronising to women
Threatened by homosexuals
Flip flopper
Policies? What policies?
Had a charisma bypass
Do you really want to see this guy as our next PM?

Is there a third choice?

The hours are horrible, the responsibilities onerous, the pay not great (except for their Super scheme), and the insults and treachery endless.

Capable people can do much better in the private sector and not be exposed to all the rubbish involved in political manoeuvering.

It's a bit like playing the card game of patience - sometimes you just can't resolve the game and you have to fudge it with a quick shuffle. We need a shuffle to bring up some new cards.

... and if that doesn't do it, then we will need to sneak a card from the trapped ones

Yes, I do believe that most normal people wouldn't want to be a politician.

I also believe that most normal people are not happy with the performance of our politicians.

Seems like there is an obvious problem that needs to be resolved.

The fundamental problem is that as a politician, you serve your party first and the people second.

At the moment this is being compounded with specific leadership problems with both major parties.

Gillard must be licking her chops as both Rudd and Abbott shoot themselves down and become less and less credible.

Gillard becomes PM.

Problem is we give democratically our politicians right to do almost as they please.

In case of our latest choice, first motto was to do it differently to what Mr Howard did, to sorry everything that could be sorried, throw buckets of money to quick-fix almost non-existent financial crisis in Australia.

And I am not going to mention the boat imports or their content.

After watching Tony Abbot's performance on the 7.30 report last night, you would have to have serious doubts about him holding on to the leadership of the liberal party.
Expect a Malcolm Turnbull or Joe Hockey recycling shortly.Although Lindsay Tanner gave Joe Hockey a bit of a flogging on QUANDA.
At least turnbull knows how to make money.
The trouble is choice. No party seems to have any believable direction at this point in time.
The only certainty is that government will not be cheaper for any of the "ordinary australians". You know! anyone outside of their particular political party

Alan Greenspan mentions in his book (only half-jokingly) that anyone who is willing to do what it takes to reach the Office of the President is unfit to run for office.

The description works for our political system too.

I seriously considered a career in politics at one stage...

But it came down to a very simple decision. If I did what was in the best interests of the state / country then you, the voters, would simply not vote for me because the majority of voters are short term focused and don't think about tomorrow.
