I pinched this title from Professor Julius Sumner Miller's popular TV show. Most of you would be too young to remember him. Born and raised in the USA, the Professor roamed the world, bringing the light of science to the masses, through his demonstrations in Physics, and more than a little philosophy rolled in.

There are many abstruse questions to which there appear no answers.

Why is it that at this moment, my neighbour, who is normally as quite as a church mouse, is talking so loudly on his mobile that I can follow his conversation?

Remember the professor well! Your neighbour could be talking loudly for number of reasons. My bet he is new to the technology (mobile phones) and..
1. subconciously because the mouth piece is not at his mouth he has to talk loudly so that his voice can reach it;
2. he wants everyone to know that he NOW has a mobile phone.

Or he wants you to hear the conversation...
or he is suffering deafness himself.

The professor...

Thanks jbocker. None of you suggestions apply in his case, but I think you are on the money with;

Yeah, same here... and that question has been in the forefront of my mind ever since.

Fascinating question for some of us, but of little or no significance for many who live in the here and now in the middle or back of the paradym shift, pretty much just going with the flow.

But while the Prof specialised in applying it to physics, I digressed and couldn't help applying it to pretty much everything, including human behaviour, ie why is it so that many people can experience the same situation, but perceive it and react differently.

... a bit of a contrairian, even devils advocate counter-question... what makes you think he is behaving differently rather than some change in the enviounment that may make sound travel better from his place to yours, ie renovations/alterations, prevailing wind direction change etc?

I don't think he is behaving differently. It is a common practice for mobile phone users to talk loudly. I was using my neighbour as an example only.

Because you have else nothing better to do then be a sticky beak to your neighbour.
You probably know all the plants and veggies in his garden too

getting back to the question gentlemen, you have given some clues:

*He is normally quiet as a church mouse
* he is shouting into the phone
* guessing he is an older fellow?

I suspect hearing loss, a progressive condition that affects many older people, especially if they were subject to industrial noise.

Try talking to him so he cant see your lips, and if he keeps saying "what" all the time, then you will be close to the answer.

A guy I know is deaf, he is a great neighbour in one respect, as he makes almost no noise at all.
