"Academic freedom is being suppressed, says Ben Stein. He contends that professors from around the United States are being fired from their jobs for promoting, or even exploring the possibility of, intelligent design as an alternative to Darwinism. Stein interviews the expelled academics and other supporters of intelligent design. He also interviews the scientists in the mainstream, who support Darwinism. Stein links Darwinism to Nazism, Communism, eugenics and abortion. Vintage clips of educational films and Hollywood movies are used to illustrate points in a satirical way."

On one of the God/Religion threads I asked a hypothetical question:

What would happen if we woke up tomorrow and a scientist had unquestionable proof that God or higher being existed? Or on the the opposite - what if a scientist had unquestionable proof that God or a higher being did not exist, that we were just a product of randomness and evolution? How would this affect the society we live in.

Well I can pretty much answer the first part of my question. If God/higher being was proven, it would simply be covered up by the scientific community. Which is quite ironic, considering that this is exactly what religion has done for hundreds of years to control people.

If God was proven by the scientists I would want to know which churches he/she was affiliated with.

If the Catholics featured in that list I would be on the phone to Father O'whatsisface to enquire if the confession/forgiveness deal was still happening and if so, could I make an appointment to explain a few misunderstandings.

If God or a higher being was proven, what makes you assume he'd be affiliated with a church/religion?

I should also add, I am on neither side of the if God or higher being exists/doesn't exist debate. I respect peoples beliefs, but I simply think it is ignorant to completely rule out the possibilities.

Oh go on now. God or higher being wouldn`t be playing hide n seek this long to be found out. Barking up the wrong tree again .. so to speak.

heard a really interesting interview on ABC radio about "fixed delusions", focusing on the extreme difficulty of treating people who suffer them, due to an inability for the delusion to be dispelled, as persons are able to ignore all rational evidence.

The conversation turned to God, the scientist concerned was a little bit reluctant to fully commit, but essentially he said, yes God is likely to be such a delusion.

He said "The God delusion" by Richard Dawkins was a crap book, and did not address the question in the direction that professionals who deal with sufferers of fixed delusion focus on.

I thought it was a very dull book too.

I am of the opinion that God is a delusion, but I concede I may be totally wrong

Have to admit I found the book a little "ranty"; I probably wanted to like it more than approach it with an open mind, despite not being agnostic.

Intelligent design is nothing more than an attempt to merge church and state in order for religion to have more power over the people.

God (figuratively speaking) help us if that occurs.

Call me ignorant than, because I know it's a load of rubbish :)

And, no - I don't respect peoples beliefs, as religion causes nothing but problems, with bible-thumpers trying to force their way of life onto others, the way it influences the law, and social standards - and don't even get me started on extremists.

What would happen if we finally had proof that god didn't exist? The world would become a utopia.

I'll call shenanagins on this one. The scientific community have made numerous reference to a higher being throughout history. Pro Big Bang scientists have no concept of what was beore the Big Bang. The theory starts with a singularity. From that singularity came time and matter and as matter is energy, we had a start.

A true scientist who favours the Big Bang would not postulate before the Big Bang because the rules break down therefore there can be no theory based on sound scientific fact or logic. Theology then takes over when there can be no logic from a scientific point of view.

Albert Einstein, probably one of the most famous of the scientific community (involved in recent pop culture and the like) was famous for the line "God does not play dice!"
From memory he was talking about his cosmological constant.

To say the scientific community would cover up such a find would be based on human nature for individual greed, much like the churches have done through history. I would imagine the scientiific community only strive for logical, tangible evidence of everything and anything; to understand.

Why would they forgo the opportunity to study the universe's biggest question?

cheers,

God does exist and I live next door to him. Every night at about 10.00pm I hear this woman screaming "Oh God, Oh God" followed by a strange thumping noise that sounds like a bedhead hitting a wall.

If there was a God or some omniscient being that created this weird experiment called humanity, he/she/it must be laughing behind our backs right now at the way we have messed the experiment up. Why stop at one God? Why not have several like the ancient Greeks? Collectively they are now laughing at us and our attempt at higher conciousness.
