There has been a show of support for Federal Liberal frontbencher Andrew Robb who has announced he is standing down while he deals with a depressive illness.

Poor bastard, imagine being the spokesman for emissions trading, he's probably still trying to work out what it is, I know I am.

This may sound insensitive, but I reckon Andrew Robb is not made of the 'right stuff'.

Who has never felt depressed and not wanted to get out of bed at some stage in their life?

Jo Public doesn't have the luxury of a fully paid three month sabatical/holiday to get over their own problems.

I think if more folk who were depressed took some time off to get themselves back together , the world would be a better place.

Andrew Robb has done the correct thing and Kevin Rudd has again demonstrated his leadership by his supportive comments.

Thats one of my all time favourites and I reguritate it regularly after substantial social refreshments.

Robb seems to have a recognised form of clinical depression, I think I've been close. perhaps even clinically depressed, comes and goes, a bit acary though when you cant think of a reason to wake up in the morning.

Whatever you want to call it, clinically depressed , depressed, very depressed , chemically depressed, they all mean the same.

When you are depressed you are unable to "toughen the **** up."

If you can, you are not depressed.

I use the term clinically depressed as being someone who's life is effected by it, not just the odd case of the blues.
I'm sure I've been there, you lose interest in the things you usually get enjoyment from, dark place to be.

Macquack,

Despite the best efforts of organisations like Beyond Blue it seems the message isn't getting through as people still exist in society with attitudes such as this.

Depression is a serious and deadly illness. I have suffered from it at various times in my life and at the worst of it lost complete perspective on everything to the point that topping myself seemed like the only option at the time. Thankfully that it is a fair way in the past now and I lead a relatively normal functional life and have achieved a pretty reasonable reputation in my profession.

Better of directing someone displaying symtoms of depression to the appropriate help rather than simply telling them to grab a bag of cement.

Fair comment, Peanut (except for the halfwit bit).

My point is he would be a lot more depressed if he had to battle on and keep paying a mortgage without a pay packet coming in.

Politicians are a privileged bunch, dont feel too sorry for any of them.

Politicians do have generous leave entitlements.

I reckon it would be the sort of job that could really mess with yr head, if you are that way inclined.

If you have an illness and an entitlement to leave, then you would be best off taking the leave imo.

think you would find probably even a higher % of pollies would suffer depression than the rest of the community, takes some guts for him to bite the bullet and take action on his health issue

I have reconsidered my view on Andrew Robb and now believe he is entitled to three months leave from his duties and should be fully compensated at the same rate of benefit as a disability pensioner.

I'm not getting into it as its no excuse and none of anyone’s business, however I have suffered from clinically diagnosed depression for near on 18 yrs - well that’s first when it was labelled at me. So, I guess I have a few insights that some don’t.

However, I find it somewhat funny that AR ran the Liberal Party in QLD and nationally for some 10 odd yrs (if not longer), a number of House committee's etc. Just think it’s all a little too sudden to be feeling sorry for this guy. Depression when coupled with very high pressure jobs – and what could be more high pressured than having to deal with Howard and the QLD LNP for 10 yrs :D, and not a single symptom has popped its ugly head up. You can’t manage it that well for that long without it being known, or the effects showing.

Quit the job, get the help, and apply for the disability pension - some 6 week waiting period, then cope with the $200 a week. See if that doesn’t really make him depressed.

Agree, Stocks. He apparently does not have simple clinical depression.
He rather has 'diurnal variation depression'. This means, he says, that he wakes up in a low mood but after a couple of hours he's able to feel fairly normal.
I've been like that for as long as I can remember. Like the night hours.
Hate mornings. Nothing pathological about that.

Just a bit of a coincidence that it all became too much for him just as the climate change thing was getting all too hard.
