These visitors still seem to be getting lost.

I suppose it is good practice for the SES, Police and ADF to try and find them. So there may be some benefit to our emergency services.

A cost benefit analysis needs to be done and a fee levied on all incoming visitors which is reimbursed when they leave the country, not having been "lost" in the interim.

In the meantime, let us hope this young lad is found alive and well.

if this is the young german fella thats gone missing in the west ... this is a worry .. its not a matter of getting lost in the bush , he has dissapeared under suspicious circumstances , my heart goes out to his family as this one not looking so good so far.
 
considering we have to pay when we call an ambulance.. i suppose it would be fair if a rescue search team is called out for lost backpackers a fee charged...
 
Is getting lost something one can insure against? If so, then maybe such insurance should be mandatory.

While this case differs, it would be interesting to find out whether a particular state or federal government's public liability insurance could be claimed against when someone goes missing in a park etc. under their juristriction. Most popular hiking areas attract some sort of permit that needs to be purchased so is it possible that part of any fees colllected that way would be for the said insurance? Just a thought.

Yes, that's the sort of thing I had in mind.

Then there is the very different situation of lone sailors in, e.g. the southern ocean. Cost of rescuing these people is massive. Would insurance companies be up for insuring such a risky venture?

The major problem with those scenarios eg. Mr. Bullimore and the million dollar plus cost of rescueing him, is that they all happen in international waters and we (Australia) are signatories to international treaties that require of us to respond. Perhaps we need to explore seeking some amendments in that direction that place some onus on the country of nationality to share the expense?

Force all tourists to have insurance which will have a search and rescue component incorporated in the cost.

Good practice???? Are you kidding???? These people have much more important things to be doing than chasing around after bonehead tourists/Yachties..

Although, the circumstances around this case are a little different.. Amen to finding him alive and well..
