I wonder if these can also be applied to take over from politicians? Although we may have to dumb them down a little!!
 
As long as they incorporate the Three Laws of Robotics, we will be safe. :)


PS I've just finished reading The Complete Robot by Isaac Asimov. He was 50 years ahead of his time.

They have already, his name is Karl Stefanovic. Can be seen trying to assimilate with the humans on Channel 9. Drop him behind enemy lines and they will all be stuffed. Bore them to death from 200 yards.

The tech isn't here yet, and it is very unlikely that true AI like they have in sci-fi movies is ever going to happen. Having knowledge of coding for software, it is an impossibility for a set of coding to learn and grow on its own and be self thinking at the capacity of a human...

Not wanting to take this thread off on a tangent, but would be interested to hear thoughts on 'neural networks', especially as applied to trading and trading software. I don't know much about them but given your background jono if your interested wouldn't mind starting a thread to discuss?

Impossible is a strong word. Think of our own evolution.

Here is a recent paper written about the very problem - it sounds that it would become so exponentially complex to integrate all the separate systems involved that you would be looking at a project lasting hundreds of years

The only way I could see would be that you would have to have a system that was smart enough to start writing code itself, while at the same time understanding what it had to do or what it was trying to achieve - heading down the chicken and the egg track here.

As for battlefield robots, these things won't have true artificial intelligence, just a very complicated set of operating instructions and boundaries. Their autonomy would be very limited.
 
The problem with speculation of the future is that you cannot imagine the advances we may possible make. It's like a man from the 19th Century trying to predict what would be accompished in the 20th Century.
 
advances in quantum computing and associated AI and robotics development have the potential to create "intelligence". short term integrating mechanical and computing systems into humans is more likely. there might be a few bugs to iron out though ...

This is very true, the level of intelligence that battlefield robots could have in this century would be at the level of computer game battle AI. All that these are able to achieve is to learn the maneuvers and strategic decisions that the enemy makes and act against or not in the same manner. When playing games such as counter strike... using the same strategy will not work if you use it over and over again - the software learns from trial and error and stores in its memory banks the moves that you have made in the past.

However, with real life battles.. the number of variables are far larger than found in a computer game. Have the hardware to process these variables and the software to store scenario's is probably as far as AI can get for self learning.

The egg will never be able to make the chicken...
 
"The earth is flat" ... was a popular theory not too long ago. To claim impossibility due to CURRENT software/hardware limitations does not preclude what may happen in the future. I also chuckle to myself that an Atari game console has more computing power than Apollo 13 (famous NASA rocket that got into trouble, also great movie). I personally hope there will be AI in my lifetime.

Why? what do you hope will be achieved with AI? How will it be any different to having human intelligence?

wouldn't it be more effective to build worker robots to rid the world of blue-collar jobs so us humans are able to do the thinking?

Or you mean some do the thinking, while the rest lay about doing nothing? The powers that be won't like that, as there's probably nothing more dangerous to them than an unoccupied populace.

We can't imagine how things will change. There's a lot of technology being developed or already developed that most people wouldn't expect in 50 years time. That's just the stuff some of the public knows about - imagine what is kept behind locked doors.
