I noticed something quite interesting this morning with six Black Hawk helicopters flying in unison to the east of Melbourne, that would almost be the entire Defence Force fleet!!! (tongue in cheek) A few people have mentioned seeing them perform drills around the City lately, around the time that the air-show was on at Avalon.

i saw them a few minutes ago. rattled the entire building apart here..

they have been doing exercises in and around melbourne, training on how to land at all cleared areas like parks and sports grounds in the inner melbourne region..

about 2 weeks ago they buzzed my wife on a tram, literally followed it down st kilda road floating above it.. they are extremely powerful and noisy helicopters none the less, and sure wake you up when they are overhead..

Fun to ride in. Huey's are better. The Harley of the sky.

I read yesterday that we can't deploy any of them because of their vulnerability to ground based rockets.

Wonder why we have them?

Ah, for airshows!

I believe it's the SAS, they do these exercises annually in a different city each year. They simulate hostage/terrorism scenarios and what not. I live inner city and have seen them flying low and fast at night with no lights. When I first saw them I was wondering what the f*** was going on!

they have em here, golden bay(nz), to pick up the dope plants the hippies grow(like nz is so boring often i guess many have to resort to dope).
i guess they hold a lot, thats why they r used, esp since so much is gown.
if they used a blackhawk then they would most likely catch the hippie zoned out in his plot and have to lug him away too, so i guess u cant have that...like who would grow next yrs crop for the cops and co to sell...

A UH1 cranking at 110 knots is pure bliss . Helicopter pr0n as far as I'm concerned .
I was lucky enough to spend 4-5 days a week in Hueys flying around East Timor for 6 months. The NZ pilots loved to tac fly, which made is great fun. With the Singaporeans it was like being in a school bus. Not much better than the Russians in their Hinds. Actually got some stick time in a Huey in the middle of NT a number of years ago. Whoohooo!! :)

Last i checked, they cost some ridiculous amount to run. I think it was $15,000 per hour? (including everything)

I agree with Kennas, nothing beats the thrill of flying in a huey. My first Famil flight was back in the late 70's. The pilots ex nam vets, having some fun ad I reckon to see who could get the most to throw up. Still remember the 3 pilots tac flying competing who can fly on their side the longest. For those of us "fortunate" enough to have scored an outside seat flying on your side looking down on the ground with the door pinned back and only a bit of webbing holding you in is a thrill to imagine.

Blackhawks are the merc's of ARA transport boring as all **** and no where near as fun. You knew that you were flying in hueys.

Chooks would be the worst to transport in noisy smelly and uncomfortable, sitting in web sling seats facing each other often with pallets of crap in the middle and with the rear ramp down the sickly kero smell of AVGAS swirled in.

Lat but not least the ferrari of the chopper world the tiger. I was lucky enough to be at oakey not long after the first ones were delivered. The universal currency enabled me to get the chance to sit in the cockpit of one of these machines. ( Got the pics to prove it)Ok if your a skinny short person but a tight fit for an ex drop short.

The only good thing about AVGAS was its ability to strip boots back prior to spit polishing. This is back before todays parade boot when you spent hrs polishing boots to a mirror shine only to have to start again because of a clumsy drill movement dropped a SLR on one and cracked the coating of polish.

Thought the Chooks were Jet powered.?
Spend 1 Easter polishing boots for a passing out parade

sting would be talking about AVTUR (Aviation Turbine Fuel) for Gas turbines . AVGAS is the piston variety.
Have a mate at Eurocopter in Brisbane who was building the Tiger , he sent me a DVD of it's flying capability. I was most impressed . Havent heard from him for a while but I think he has moved on to the NH90 .

A Huey that has been rotor smoothed to a 1 per rev under 0.10 inches per second is just an absolute delight. I would only imagine Sting that the one's back in the seventies would have been rough as guts since the blade tracking back then was done by strobe and guess work , but I'm only guessing .

seasprite I stand corrected it was AVTUR sickly sweet smelling oily stuff
