Hot Dog Stands

Don't know about you, but I love a good hotdog.

I have a house that is in prime position for a Hotdog stand.

It is opposite the train station, on a corner, and sparrows from a major entertainment venue.

The other night, there was a music festival for over 18's. There were barricades around my house and security gaurds patroling the streets. Later on there were Police and paddy wagons, more security to control the crowd!

The crowd sort of mingles around my house waiting for a train, or bus, or taxi etc, they chat over the fence blah blah....

If I let them use the toilet at $1 a throw, I would be rich- but with a broken toilet.

I would have easily sold 1000 hotdogs at $6 a pop, and because it is an old QLD shop corner, with big awnings, I started to dream!

Has anyone here had any experience running a stand, and willing to share the trials and tribulations of their experience?

Would be very handy to wheel the stands back into the garage til next time.

These events only happen around every 3 months, but there are smaller events that would be bread and butter.

your first step is too aproach local council for a " food vendors "permit, also a "street vendors "permit . there are numerous ones available and each have there varying conditions with some needing public comment .

i am involved and have been involved in a similar situation but with nightclubs/bike runs/festivals and my situation will vary to yours .

not as easy as just bangin up a cart and floggin hotdogs to hungry punters

gotta love 200-400% markup tho

P.s ......... these permits / permissions/ conditions/ outcomes

vary GREATLY from council to council ......

have been made to jump through hoops and other citys/councils/localitys i have had nothing but green lights all the way

Let me know when you are going to float the company after the Council court cases and word of advise don't put the profit's into Storm.
By the time this depression is over there will be door to door selling in every burb.

I am aware of jumping through hoops, we have to support the do-gooders in justifying their jobs!

Bit disappointed in the 200-400% markup though, I generally don't get out of bed for under 500%.

How many hotdoggies would you sell at a nightclub or festival?

Do you sell drinks too?

LOL . re getting out of bed for less than 500% i just gave a rough average .

each item varies . a plain hotdog with onions NO extras cept sauce actually around the 500% mark


hamburger with the lot = 200%

Chips the best money spinner tho

yes i sell drinks too = 150%-300% markup depending on what and where u get it

re how many ..... thats nun ya business but will say the nightclubs more lucrative as no competition in current location .
festivals often varying vendors so have to be priced well to compete and draw ther punters

personally EVEN with no competition i tend to price fairly as would rather sell 2 hotdogs to 1 person than hear them whinge about paying for 1

Lol, no doubt they will be a big seller in the depression. Thought I would get in early

Wiser's Weenies could be good, but probably be something more like "Hot Dogs"... Hey, what about this! "Get ya hot doggies"

You could eventually setup a credit facility for customers who are super hungry, but just spent their last coins on beer, once you have enough outstanding accounts, you could package them up and sell them off to investors in small countries! What a good idea!!:

Rofl, after seeing people like you making a killing off suckers like me, I did try to get into the business. I got in contact with a few places, and just ran into too many troubles, most of them already had deals with big business and wouldn't allow me. Industry contacts will go a long way.
I agree with ole nunny, get in very early.

all depends on ones setup.

the more deep fryers u got the more chips one can pump out...... all depends if its viable to spend the extra cash

i have a double deep fryer for chips alone and a single for fish/cheese snags/dim sims etc etc etc ........

yes the equipment can get expensive BUT cheap compared to other ventures i have set up/involved in

no point pumping out a thousand hotdogs an hour unless u got a 1000 punters an hour buying them tho .....lol thats a lot of hotdogs by the way

That's some funny stuff, but all I am thinking of doing is getting some crew to fire up them doggies and prehaps netting a lazy few grand for the evening, paying some wages, and feeding the hungry!

Also, if on average I net $500 per week selling Hot Dogs, isn't this business saleable for around $75K? Then I charge them rent to setup on my footpath

yeah i havent cooked anything myself in a while actually . just around to keep an eye on the cash .WHICH IS A MUST being a cash bizzness ......

might pay to butter up your neighbours /locals first BEFORE actually applying too .... it will be submitted for public comment if no similar bizzo already in immediate area ..... just my 2 cents ........may be different in your neck of woods

Well, there is a greasy spoon on the other corner, but he is not open at 7pm to 11pm when the drunks arrive!

The front of our house has been a shop of one sort or the other for many years, but when we bought it, there wasn't much foot traffic, so we turned it into a loungeroom.

10 years later, there is like 5000 people passing the door! Only for short periods like, maybe 100 every time a train pulls in, every half an hour, but going home is a different story! The whole 5000 come to my house over one hour and stay for 3 hours! It is like a ready made data base right there!

The demographic over these few hours could even make MLM successful

i can see the attraction of putting food there then if there is that amount of traffic BUT i have a couple of points

1. is this the family home and you wish to continue living there in reasonable peace ? as once you start trading with drunks at the front of your house . things change ....... not just protecting your bizzness from an agressive drunk BUT having to defend your home and whats inside also .


i am well known in the places i trade YET i still get the odd hassle from ppl that cant handle there booze etc ...... bad enough dealing with it at my place of bizzness let alone having it at my loungeroom

my staff are looked after by the bouncers / nightclub staff and also in a locked enviroment where they serve thru a hatch so fairly untouchable if a violent situation occurs . if the situation STILL gets out of hand after that i have the choice to shut shop and go home and leave the buggars to it . It may not be so easy if the troubles on your front doorstep

sure sounds like you have an opportunity to profit from all the unfed traffick but do consider the fact that this same bunch of drunken hungry punters can also be VERY unpredictable at times and its not something I personally would like to deal with at my family home ....... never sheet in ya own backyard they say and if push comes to shove and things get nasty ( and it does on occasion when dealing with these crowds) u have to consider the fact that the repurcussions will be directed towards your home
