The Ideal Aussie PM

It seems that you need five chief characteristics to have a chance of becoming the PM in Australia:
1. Male;
2. Grey hair;
3. Spectacles;
4. A love of the cliche; and
5. An 'economic conservative'.

What does this say of Australian society? That we are conservative and risk averse? Would Australia ever tolerate an Obama, Sargozy or even a Gordon Brown.

The last PM with charisma was Keating. Johnny was many things, but charismatic and inspiring he was not. Maybe I need to give Kevin07 time and see if the cliches dry up. Or maybe Garret will take up Keating's helm. Help me here Australia. Otherwise I might buy a bottle of hair dye, get some steel rimmed glasses and sign up at my local branch of the 'insert Liberal or Labor' party.

Kevin is definaitely not a great orator...but he is deep thinker and shows some vision. I think after three terms however he will voice will grate on all of us.

Look at some of the other great orators in history - Caeser, Hitler, Mussolini, Churchill, Whitlam. I think it is a good thing that he will be judged more on his performance than by his ability to inflame emotions.

What we really need is a benevolent dictator, if there is such a thing. Of course power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. I'm prepared to give Rudd a go, he can't end up worse than the last lot ended up and if he does he will get the same treatment.
After voting coalition for 50+ years I am now a confirmed swinging voter.

Australians are horribly conservative and afraid of change more so than any other people I can think of.

We have just seen the most regressive period in Australian history pass by, and I'm not sure if people realise that, and that we might now finally be stepping out of the 50s...

A2A - So, Is it more important what they say - or the tone in their voice?

i.e. would you prefer to hear fluent vitriol from Abbott

or intelligent assertiveness from a lady who would be the first to agree with you that she has a broad Aussie accent?

I tend to be a glass half full person when it comes to politics. We have been well served in many different ways by all our previous PM's.

At least Johnny got rid of "political correctness" that scourge of free speech.

Kevvie may turn out to be the best conservative PM in this nation's history, Lets give him a fair go.

Ideal is a funny word, at least all our PM's have been elected by a majority of Australians unlike Obama, Sarkie and Brown in their respective electorates.

I doubt if old baldie Garrett will be allowed breathe anywhere near a front bench, he's served his purpose and will be put to service on parliamentary committees trolling through drains and fumes.

I remember being in Mexico mid 80"s (surfing down the West Coast... long story)
and explaining to a group of wide eyed Americans along with some other Aussies that our current PM was the holder of the drinking record at Oxford, ex alcoholic, know Womanizer, ex union Chief ACTU and general larrikin still make's me laugh sounded like the perfect PM to me some one real.........

Hey Garpal, my thoughts almost exactly. Hope you're right about Garrett.
I'd like to think Mr Rudd has more political sense than to put him on the front bench.
