Railpasses are often not the best way to buy rail tickets. They can be expensive compared to point to point.

Worth considering how much time you'll be spending travelling around before you go and buy a rail pass. In some countries, like Italy, point to point ticketing is way cheaper than a Eurail pass.

I always found Deutsche Bahn's website the best for getting schedules and pricing for any rail trips in Europe...

I agree with you McLovin, I bought my tickets either on line or at the station. I thought itwas much cheaper than the rail pass.
For exmample, buying on line a ticket from York to Kings Cross was 24pound for both of us, 2 1/2hrs express $18 ea magic.
Same for the Eurostar, it is worth checking different sites for better prices. The only train fare that I thought was over the top was, 300Eu Zurich to Venice, I purchased that locally, wish I had checked online.
 
Everybody seems to have nailed the keys and the old get a map and throw darts is a great start. If I had to drop my top places it would definitely be:

Lisbon
San Sebastian
Morocco (obviously not Europe but very easy to get to!)
Hvar & Dubrovnik
Sicily (whole island is great)
Stockholm
Santorini

Really depends on your time of year - the places I've named above are more summer destinations (and amazing at that!)

I'm still thinking about it all and hope to come up with some sort of very rough plan over this coming weekend. Lots of ideas in my mind at the moment. :)

I am planning shortly a one month sojourn in a Cypriot nunnery if that helps.

My appologies, I thought you were going to Cyprus.
If you are thinking of going to the here after, best you eat the money, then you know it goes with you.
Two problems I see with that is.
One: with the amount of money you have, it will take a lot of eating.
Two: our money is plastic, it will take a lot of passing.lol

All this chat doesn't help Smurph, relocate his bank balance to Europe.

I am off to Cyprus.

I am going to Cyprus for existential and other reasons, and had planned so before the Russian criminals were outed.

Being Cypriot is not shorthand for being smart, they were desperate for criminal money from Russia and made a call and lost. They need to man up and recover.

I travel to Cyprus not for a holiday or cruise as the crudes and grey nomads do. The place was full of the type of people who in Australia dangerously tow caravans and buy funeral insurance. Thankfully with this kerfuffle they have left, or are dead.

Anyone who has their dosh in Europe deserves to lose it.

Take great care when visiting Dublin. Fine if you have a Dubliner with you showing where to go and more importantly where not to. I was told barmen and woman know an Irishman by the way he walks before he speaks and that can be costly as spotting prices is very tricky. Some locals are very hard to understand though I now know you will understand them if they want you to.

Similar issues in Scotland, trying to get a firm price on a hotel room is a nightmare. They will give a price, then when you go to pay it in the morning, the price becomes per person, or the person who gave you the price yesterday was wrong and isn't there today.
Demand to pay for the room when you ask for it, not when you leave, or be prepared for a fight.

Luxury, I paid $14 for Guinness at my local on the weekend.

But... walking distance to, and staggering distance home.

Risk amelioration premium I guess :p

One thing I would say is the quality of Guinness and its taste is far superior in Dublin than anywhere else. Maybe Australia sends its not so good Lager to Europe, it seems so.

The only places in Scotland I have been to is Dundee and Kirriemuir - I worked at a Gas Compressor Station being built very many years back. The Hotels had a habit then of adding drinks on the hotel bill when leaving. So it's probably still a good idea to check. Strange how they immediately accepted my word when querying the charges and deleted them. That's very much the case in England and it is best to pay on booking the room to avoid being overcharged. In London take care when booking a mini-cab and particularly if jumping in one not booked as it is very likely an illegal cab uninsured and maybe a maniac driver, driving wise, to boot.
