Wish I lived in the 50's *ducks head*

LOL.

Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him

That could have all sorts of assumptions these days

LOL

Where's P and J? he he.

My how the times have changed. Did women even have the vote then?

About time they dug themselves out of their long term state of repression. Although, it's only because of technology they're still not there.

**ducks**

No, Kennas, it's because of women like Germaine Greer who cops such a lot of criticism these days.

The extract Sam has posted seems completely ludicrous these days, thank God, and I'm not sure too many women quite took their marital duties to that extent anyway. But even when I first got married - and that was much later than the 50's - even wives working full time were still expected to do all the housework, all the cooking, and still swan about looking delicious.

The other ghastly expectation for young women was that they were just breeding machines. No university education for you, dear girl. You will only get married young and have babies.

We sure have come a long way.

A fascinating bit of social history from our recent past, although i doubt to many women of the era took this too seriously, probably more a wish list from the male editors of the magazine.

However I have printed it out and put it on our fridge, hopefully my wife can see the funny side, lol

That's a brave move, Gunlom.

I hope the couch is comfortable.

Cheers,

Kenny

You mean they're not anymore??? Bugger. Guess I better learn to cook.

I was raised in the late '40s/'50s in Manchester & it certainly wasn't like that in our house. Admittedly my mum did most of the cooking but my dad was a good cook too and he helped with the house work at weekends.

I remember once mum went to visit her sister in Edinburgh for a couple of weeks and dad did all the cooking. I said "That's better than mum makes" and he said "Don't ever tell her that." I was never sure if he didn't want to make her feel bad or if he didn't want to get stuck with the cooking

There's probably a lot of reasons women are now competing with men, although still not getting equal pay etc etc.

1. It's not a physical world anymore.
2. The pill.
3. Economic and social development.
4. Secular societies.
5. Margaret Thatcher.

Any more?

Actually I've printed it off for the fridge too, so my husband and kids can read it! I thought it was an interesting read. I'm a stay-at-home mum of three and I can relate to most of the above. I get a lot of stick from working mums that I meet who can't understand how I could possibly not be bored at home, wasting my life away. I did work for five years when first married, but also did all the housework and cleaning while hubby rested in front of the tv, even though my day was probably just as stressful. Now I'm a "kept woman" and although we make joint decisions over finances and the like, I do consider him the "head of the household". I have free use of the bank account, he never checks my spending gosh I'm so lucky and lets me risk it all on the sharemarket Not doing too bad so far though, of course I've got all day to sit around researching haven't I?

Yep I know my place all right - he works hard, brings home a pretty decent salary and I stay at home keeping order so that he can relax when he gets in and tries to forget about the stresses of his job. He always has a dinner waiting (which I've planned a few days ahead) and always has a clean shirt for the morning. I try to keep the clutter down which is a bit tricky as we're in the middle of building an extension, and I have taken note of the suggestion "don't greet him with complaints" something I do without thinking. I draw the line at removing his shoes for him though! He rings when he's going to be late in but I would not be amused if he stayed out all night!

Are we stuck in the 50's? No we're not. But we have something a lot of families don't have. A long marriage, comfortable life, few money worries, few stresses and three happy teenagers who are doing well at school, have never been in trouble, don't smoke, take drugs or drink, have part-time jobs, volunteer in the community (one of them recently received an award from the mayor) and I know where they are at all times. I am always busy at home, cooking, cleaning or otherwise and don't have time to be bored. I am very grateful to my husband for the long hours he works and I feel privileged to be able to stay at home. I know he appreciates my efforts in the home too as he can be quite the soppy romantic at times. He likes to cook over the weekend occasionally and de-stresses by doing a bit of DIY or having a game of pool with our son. I'm a good wife/stay-at-home mum/housewife whatever you want to label me and I wouldn't have it any other way

My only comment as a liberated woman is that I wish I could live in the 50's too

What a cushy life! Hubby goes out and works all day and all I have to do is have his dinner, a pair of slippers, roaring fire and a warm drink ready for him.

Compared to nowadays, wives back then had it easy.

P.S, I've seen dating websites devoted to this type of relationship where the man is the master and the woman is subservient. Both the men and women want this arrangement.

Damn, wish I was single again!

WTF!

lol Kennas. Thoughts like that will just get you in trouble.

Speaking of trouble, I wonder why Mrs Mackie is checking out dating sites anyway.

Cheers,

Kenny

Well as a very opinionated, strong headed fiesty female I actually agree with a lot of it. If you do not want to work and you have a partner (either sex) willing and able to support you financially and you want to do that... then why not make a warm welcoming home? Why not be clean and presentable. Why not make some effort to make a stress free escape from horrid workplaces...sounds fair just as long as a women (or man) chooses that liefstyle.

HOWEVER lol.

Never question him? Offer to take off his shoes! yeah right lol.

Also men, if you are at home while your partner if off slaving away the very least you can do is clear away the morning coffee cups, hold off on the beer until after she gets home, wear something a little more stylish than a pair of old undies or shorts for when she arrives home and please cover up beer bellies. While we are it you have had all day to plan and organise dinner so why is the meat still frozen? Why are the dogs laying on their backs panting, did you give them any water at all? And how do you manage to find every unemployed tosser in the neighbourhood who is drawn to beer in the fridge that I PAID FOR. Also the lawn doesn't mow itself lol.

Sheesh, I hope you're not speaking from personal experience! What slobs have you been having to deal with?
