Why is it so?

guessing he is an older fellow?

I suspect hearing loss, a progressive condition that affects many older people, especially if they were subject to industrial noise.
.

He is 20 years younger than me and his hearing is good. But this is irrelevant to to my question;

Why do so many mobile phone users talk so loudly? As I said earlier jbocker might be on the right track;

"1. subconciously because the mouth piece is not at his mouth he has to talk loudly so that his voice can reach it".

Calliope, I recall that you said you live in a retirement village. They always seem to have the units very close together. Doesn't seem too surprising that you can hear your neighbour on the phone.
Probably the soundproofing on the units is minimal also.

As I've said previously stated, my neighbour's situation has no relevance to the fact that I was simply posing the question as to why mobile phone users talk more loudly than they do on their fixed line phone. I was merely using my neighbour as an example.

Here is a "Why is it so?" that doesn't involve my neighbour who I am sorry I ever mentioned;

Why do people on reality TV shows like "the Biggest Loser" do so much hugging and bawling?

My current hairstyle has been nicknamed the above, as I am presently well overdue a cut.

I picked the avatar because thats the expression I usually have when I check my stocks The little orangutan looks nothing like me otherwise (I am not anywhere near as cute!!)

If I were doing a lot better with stock returns I would have used the following for my avatar...

why is it that when a man asked a horse mathematical questions i.e 9x7 and so on and so forth, it would stomp the answer with its hoove and always get the right answer?!?

N.T

Why do people on reality TV shows like "the Biggest Loser" do so much hugging and bawling?

Because before they are chosen to go on reality TV shows they are vetted to make sure they are the type that will hug and bawl and clap and get excited over nothing.

If they were to chose people at random then many, like most of us here I hope, would look on with a bemused look on their faces and wonder what all the excitement is about. Many would sit there completely disengaged and not demean themselves by taking an active part. That doesn't make for good viewing.

It's very much like why they need "clap" signs on live TV shows and canned laughter on many sitcoms. In the latter case it is to inform the viewing audience that something funny has been said or done, when in reality the action or joke wouldn't even register a 1 on the open ended laughter scale. It creates a mood without which the whole show would appear dull and boring, which in reality it probably is.
