Just watching a program on channel 2 (Catalyst) about these really smart kids, but what they gain in the brain is lost in the looks.

Why are smart or gifted people quite ugly

Care to discuss?

maybe, but it is a valid question though, why is it that extremely intelligent people tend to be more ugly/geeky. Wonder if there have been any studies done to check this

STC,
Is this really true or are we just impressed by the stereotypes? Lots of high powered, intelligent people out there who look attractive, male and female, just check out some of the executive/management level staff from top professional firms next time you're in a major city. Also, kids like to make fun of looks at schools, that's probably where these 'geek' stereotype originated.

What did they say on Catalyst? Maybe you are looking for some correlation between savants and their physcial appearance?

I was talking more so about the ugly duckling syndrome, you know the kid at school, that was so smart, so intelligent etc, but could never quite become attached to others due to thier looks.

The person that was picked on, you know the one....we have all been to school b4, and we all have had that experience.

The nerdy looking people, like the Richard Branson, and the Bill Gates

I hope I am not offending anyone

how about that australian female chess player, she certainly didn't look geeky. She was in the papers because 2 other male chess guys had a punch up over her but have forgotten her name. Or are we talking academically geeky ppl, because I can attest to that, the ppl in my course are fuggly. :D

well, i guess it makes life fair then... can't imagine a guy who is smart and good looking.... what chance do people like me have then???? :D

Well not every super intelligent person is unattractive.

can't imagine a guy who is smart and good looking

Long blonde hair, nice smile, likes fundamental investing...ring any bells? ;)

It probably relates partly to what happens at school. Those who don't have the good looks make fewer friends and spend more time in the library than on the sports oval. The library adds more to knowledge whilst sport adds more to fitness and looks thus accentuating the smart / looks divide.

That said, if you want to actually make money out of your appearance then some ability to think does help. For those males old enough to know who I'm talking about, I doubt that many realise that 1980's topless model Samantha Fox is 5'1'' tall and has two visible scars on her body - one from hip surgery as a child and also an appendix scar. She was also in the "ugly" group at school due to having to wear a leg caliper in relation to the hip problem. Didn't stop her becoming world famous and making a small fortune from her body though - it's how you use it that counts. :2twocents

I've been watching the same program, these kids are definitely not ugly, they strike me as being lonely because people are threatened by their intelligence.

Heli for example is both smart and artistically talented, she was or is an actor, she was part of the saddle club,a kids program.

And why are you even judging these kids on their looks, shouldn`t you be impressed by their amazing ability, who knows one day their could hold your life in their hands, will you be worring about their looks then? Just asking.

I remember reading somewhere that once you reach a certain level you don't really care about looks or money. Say an IQ of 150+. People with an IQ of 125+ are the ones who are the smart young things in business. Stupid enough to care about the superficial things but smart enough to know how to get it.

Not too smart about his extra-marital partners either!
But yes, very nice to look at and really charming.

Fortunately Billy Clinton did'nt hang around with Wolfwitz,Rumsfeld or the mid west Churchies ,so what does that say about Billy the Kid? I reckon he has a good legacy.
Now Bush is he a Geek ,Gook......or spooky.....I think there are plenty of Americans that can answer that question, lucidly now.
As for smart people not considering how they look, it has always intrigued me how they pick the correct path, consistently. I always feel threatened by them, guess I'm a competetive freak

because good looking people are out having fun enjoying life, etc.... the ugly people spend their time studying !

Those ugly geeky, children as* stop the clock* put it have just won bronze silver and gold, and most of them will be studying medicine,go you,so proud of them and so happy, yehhhhh :p: :)
