Having switched to trading the US markets, the most difficult thing is trying to get it quiet enough to sleep during the day.

It appears there are websites that offer "white noise” which is supposed to play sounds to help block out other noises.

I’ve found this site so far: http://whitenoisemp3s.com/sounds-like/best-for-sleep. Although, I’m not sure how to tell if it’s safe to download from there. Any advice from the techies here would be much appreciated! They offered a free one which I have downloaded, but haven't run it yet.

Just wondering if anyone has used this type of thing - and if so - has it been of any help? Also, does anyone know of any reputable websites to purchase this sort of thing?

Or just any other suggestions for getting some sleep through the day would also be appreciated :)

have you tried ear plugs?

also make sure you maintain your circadian rhythm - e.g. bright light during the night, and as much darkness during the day

damned if I know where this is heading, but to me it sounds like noise ...

ps White Noise has equal energy (power spectral density etc) for all frequencies, as against Pink Noise which has an equal amount of energy per octave.:2twocents

(white noise is like a piano or a violin that can play every note - and all the frequencies between them - at the same time )

Basically both can claim to be just plain bludy noisy ! ;)

as against musical for instance. :2twocents

Personally I'd go for music / musak / elevator music / meditation music etc

I have some brand new (unopened) panasonic noise cancelling headphones that I bought in Japan for sale if you want them.

RP-HC30 they'll block out 75% of outside noise and you don't need to listen to music for them to work.

PM me if interested

Try a bottle of Wild Turkey for breakfast, trust me you'll sleeeeep like a log!

Hi Sails,

Have you tried having the radio on, say ABC Classic FM on low volume?
Or a CD of something ordered and gentle like Mozart?

We've got quite a big building site not 60 meters away from our bedroom window. Of course builders start work at most undignified hours of the morning, way before the normal waking hour of a decadent trader.

:mad::mad::mad:

Anyway, we had some unseasonably warm weather the other week and pulled out the fan to sleep with.

The noise of the fan (which does not interfere with sleep) drowned out the noise of the builders in the morning. :)

Ahhhh sleeping in.

Thanks to all so far for the suggestions. The main problem is that we live in a high rise building (wonderful view!) but there is often someone doing renos – annoying hammering or drilling; fire alarm testing; industrial mowers, hedge trimmers, blowers, etc. These are they types of unpredictable noise I am trying to find a way of minimizing.

Yes, Agro, have tried ear plugs. Have found them uncomfortable and they don’t block out enough noise. Yes, have read up on the circadian rhythms, melatonin, etc. Have good block out curtains for this reason.

I hadn’t heard about these before so will look into them. Have done a google search on noise cancelling headphones, however, they seem to block out ambient noise rather than erratic noises. Will check them out further and see if I can try a demo somewhere. Thanks for the suggestion, Sam, and will PM if it looks promising.

I hadn't thought of the radio, Julia. Unfortunately music seems to keep me awake, but might be able to find something more monotone on the radio. Will experiment!

Ah yes, free white noise! It’s getting colder here in this part of the world so just the noise of a fan on a CD might work OK.

Hi Sails,

My wife is a yoga teaher and apart from the general forms of yoga she also teaches yoga nidra classes.

It`s basically a form of deep relaxation, and while the class may only last for 40 min or so, the befefits on the body are supposed to last for hours.
If she every need a daytime nap she will put on this CD (30min) and dozes off for a couple of hours.
She swears by it!
I`d be happy to burn a copy of it and send it on.
PM me if you`re interested :)

I had a vitamin pill made by blackmores the other day and had the best sleep i have ever had, It claims to be a non habit forming vitamin pill that you take 1/2 before sleep to help induce a deep calm sleep, it's not a drug sleeping pill just vitamins and minerals and herbs, might be worth a try, I can't remember what it was called, but it was somthing like "calm nights" or "Calm Sleep"

Thanks Tyson - will check it out. Although they claim it's not habit forming, I'm not sure how much testing is done on vitamin pills to support those type of claims. Does anyone know?

I guess they would be a Valerian based pill.

They are quite safe, but lose their effect if taken regularly. They work magic on some people, but don't work at all on others.

Chamomile tea sends me off too lala land very quickly if I drink it infrequently.

I checked out those Blackmore's products on the website - yes Wayne, Valerian-based.

I had a listen to the 'pink noise' (linked above, on Wikipedia) and from there I listened to 'brown noise' too. Brown noise reminds me of the sound of (heavy) rain falling - might be more useful for sleeping than white noise.

this one from the joke thread ;)
(sorry if I'm not treating your problem with due reverence)

Paddy and his missus are lying in bed listening to the next door neighbours' dog barking. It had been barking for hours and hours.

Suddenly Paddy jumps up out of bed and says "I've had enough of this".
He goes downstairs.

Paddy finally comes back up to bed and his wife says, "The dog is still barking. What have you been doing?"

Paddy says "I've put the dog in our yard . Fookin' see how THEY like it !"

PS you could try venetian blinds ?
plus curtains?
plus double curtains?

btw, if it wasn't for venetian blinds , it would be curtains for all of us. :2twocents
