Hi there, I want to buy and sell shares during the day. I work offshore in the oil and gas industry so I have a lot of spare time when Im not working. I also have a lot of money to back myself with share trading. I would like to do this for a living. The problem is I know nothing about it (yet). I just bought my first shares last month and did well. I used Westpac to buy these shares. I would like to watch the shares more closely and buy and sell frequently by the seconds/minutes/hours during the day. From what I have gathered is Westpac doesnt allow you to do this. I was in a hotel foyer once and a guy explained how he did it for a living. His laptop had some software on it and had all kinds of different graphs and tabs for this and that and the software calculated the risks and best times to buy and sell. He would buy one minute, sell 5minutes later and make $50.

How can I do this? What company or software is best for this? Do I need to be trained for this or go to a seminar?

Please point me in the right direction to get started.

Thanks

Stick around mate and read. There's lot here that do this "for a living",,,,,, of sorts.

But its not something you will succeed at going to a weekend seminar. Nor something that you will likely win at without a lot experience. The software is secondary more important is understanding and knowledge about trading.

Search this forum using the search feature under such topics as "trading" and "software"...there are dozens of threads that will give you countless hours of reading while you have idle time at work.

Bear in mind that to to share trade succesfully, is a very hard thing to do, takes a long time to learn properly, and has a low success rate.

As a learner, you are essentially competing against others with better tools and more knowledge, and they will be hoping to transfer your dollars into their pockets.

Funnily enough, having a really good start to your trading can be dangerous, as it can lead you to over-confidence.

Good on ya for starting

Hi turfy;

How long did it take you to learn your current trade offshore? Two years? Three? Maybe four?
That's the minimum of what it will take you to learn theshare trading profession.

How much diid it cost to learn your trade?
That may only be a fraction of your costs if you get a single leveraged trade wrong.

No matter what that stranger in a hotel foyer told you: If trading were that easy, this Forum wouldn't exist because everybody would sit in a deck chair of a Luxury Liner sipping champers.

Now, having robbed you of that illusion, you can do something to start your education: Visit http://www.asx.com.au/resources/education/classes/shares/index.htm and study the videos. When you get to the last one, # 11, come back and ask for software people use to help them trading.

fwiw, the software I use is http://www.mdsfinancial.com.au/RetailSolutions.aspx?sec=RS_MAOVERVIEW
