What would you do: an ethical question?

Thank you all for interesting responses.
Another factor which I don't think anyone has particularly commented on is ....One further factor..... Fifteen more factors lol....
Julia - next ethical problem you set for us, can you limit it to about 8 factors pls lol. Maybe we should set up a collective consultancy -
Call ourselves "Ethics Anonymous" or some such

Real life example: and two drunk guys stumble on to the road. ..run away leaving my friend with a broken windshield.
Lol - so did your friend charge for hit and run.
I had a dog hit by a car once, (driver stopped) and they charged me $300 for damage to the car - fortunately big dog and he was ok, despite several somersaults down the road. The dog was sober btw.

But we'd all agree surely that hit and run when people are injured is about as cowardly as it gets - I'm glad I'm not a priest taking confession - who has to keep it quiet ( I assume?) - or a lawyer who has to defend someone like that. Lawyers in particular must grow immune from ethics - and then or course there are those cases where they put their heart into a legitimate defense, and the stupid court gets it wrong.

Case in point - Aus teenage kid sadly with mental age about 8 - but really nice kid - gets involved in the Cronulla riots - REACTING to assault (wrong place wrong time) - caught on Channel 7 camera - police insist they grass on him with footage - now in jail for 3 months ( the NSW Govt being seen to be TOUGH - sheesh take about Murphy's timing). Meanwhile Lebanese kids cant seem to be identified for some reason. Very lopsided history of arrests.

Hardmoney,

It's not my site, it belongs to Joe Blow. I am a lowly mod who tries to upold the Code Of Conduct as best I can.

I did not censor your view, just the sentence that insulted all else with a different view to yours.

Cheers

Wayne,
Fair Dinkum if you find the word "nonsense", which is the word that I used to describe some of the actions in this hypothetical scenario to be offensive then I'm just gobsmaked.

A friend of mine was an expat working in Saudi Arabia and (stupidly) went for a drive through a dangerous part of Riyadh that foreigners were not supposed to go though. He got lost and went down a dodgy street and was spotted by locals as a foreigner and they started chasing his car. Somehow the word travelled down the street and heaps of people came out from some alley ways and houses down the road and blocked the way. He absolutely crapped himself and knew that if he stopped he'd be killed, so he sped up and drove straight through the crowd knocking over two or three of them at high speed. He didn't know what happened to them after, but he got out. Probably a time when you do hit and run.

Kennas - there was a classic case of a fellow in PNG (pre 1972 independence) who hit a kid in a vilage - You probably know that you dont stop under such circumstances !!! IMPORTANT. You go straight to a police station to report it. Anyway, another car , driven by a newbie to the territory stopped (horrified) to render assistance. The villagesr killed him . The child incidentally was ok. The only victim then was the Good Samaritan

Beware of thinking you're in Aus when you're overseas - I know of a case of a nuisance phonecaller in PNG making improper suggestions to a switchboard girl at a big company - she put him on hold and called the cops - he was caught. Anyway, he came up before court - got 3 months hard labour . Same day a cannibal was found guilty - got 2 months hard labour lol ( to be fair - he was not charged with murder, just "interfering with a dead body") . opcorn: - hek where was I going with that one lol - one conclusion (of many) is that a twisted mind might draw is that if you want to try human flesh - do it in PNG rather than aus lol. - YUK! SHUDDUP!! - and make nuisance phonecalls in Aus rather than PNG

PS about that case I mentioned below about the riots, and the kid in jail -
a) the police were hopelessly negligent in letting the situation get out of control over the preceding months - the nearest police stn / presence of any significance (to these beaches where the poor bludy lifeguards - KIDS THEMSELVES - were CONSTANTLY threatened in the weeks leading up to thyis - was 15 mins away )
b) the botchup and grandstanding since then ( by police and Govt) has (last week) caused the Police Minister to lose job
c) and meanwhile this kid is in jail.
But I'm not suggesting anyone respond here - THere'll be PLENTY of opportunity on the "Religious leader Raped" thread - starting with this weekend imho ( unless of cors the march is called off). And there'll be plenty of publicity when the REport on Cronulla comes out again imho.

I think Mary should try and organise another appointment with Bill, but she should have a chat with Legal Aid first and have a solicitor present with her when she meets Bill. This way you give him a chance to come handle things. Seeing as he met Mary in the first place, it seems as if he wants to own up and take responsibility.

Whoa Kenna's,

What you're saying is that your mate used his vehicle to conduct a series of pre emptive strikes!! I'm sure George would approve, they are after all, only Arabs..

I don't run Preemtive strikes, look at the mess they have got us in recently..

It seems to me that 'Bill' has, upon reflection, considered his actions inappropriate and is attempting to right the wrong..

It also seems that there are many here that may not have been caught up 'in a moment'. Quite often actions taken at the time, when considered in the cold hard light of day, don't appear to have been in the best interests of all concerned.. The ol' cliche is that everybody has 20/20 vision in hindsight stands true.

If I were in the shoes of Mary I would maintain confidentiality, however ensure that a solicitor be made availabe.. after all she has a duty of care, and given the 'state' that he is in, he may well consider self harm.. And would'nt that be tragic if at the end of the day he'd necked himself because he hit some drunk (or not) mug playing chicken (as we have seen recently on the current affair shows aka Jackass style) with the traffic..

Give him the opportunity to make good, and if he fails to do so... Nail his ass

Regards,

Buster
