What do you spend on fuel?

Looking at a car deal where they are including a year's free fuel.
With my low kms, that's meaningless to me, but I need to know the value of what I expect as a consequent reduction in the asking price when I exclude that offer.

Hi Julia

I hear from an eggspurt that average person's Km's per year is around 20,000.
I expect 10km's per litre from my little gem, so roughly 2,000 litres!
Use KevvyKrudd's_Fuel_watch.com for fuel price (I don't get out much any more)

There is a trap here, they will of course quote Highway consumption of economic model

Julia, I'd be surprised if it was an open check for all the fuel you would use in a year. I think they usually have a limit based on some average usage. They likely also nominate the fuel station operator or company. If a (local) fuel station operator you will miss out if you travel far from home.

Have they shown you the fine print of the offer? If not ask them what the cap is on the offer.

No, Whiskers, I've not got as far as any fine print on the offer.
I suspect that it's probably not a generic offer to any buyer, but made in the knowledge of the low kms I do.

Hardly a deal breaker for me.

way too much thats for sure,i do about 325 kms a week by doing 60 kms a day to the depot & back home & around 25 kms on saturday & no driving on sundays at all as i drive every night so i hate getting in the car on sundays.

i fuel up every friday morning as its the cheapest then & my little pulsar gets over 600kms a tank so this morning at $1.19 i filled it up from half way & cost $26.so maybe yearly average cost between $1300 to $1500 plus rego $500 insurance $1200 & sevice $360 throw in 2 tyres AT! $200 each bridgestone turanzas rough total of.........about $4,000.good luck

tigerboi, you should shop around. I think you are getting robbed by those nasty thieving insurance companies.

I use $11 per 100 kms with mostly country driving. That is running a 2.6 litre 4 cylinder. Around town it would jump to $13 to $14 per hundred kms. Cheers.

I did see some official statistics a few years ago on distance travelled.

Figures varied by state and were all within 13,000 - 16,500 km per year from memory. Tas was the lowest for fairly obvious reasons but I can't remember which state was highest.

A lot of people say 20,000 km is normal, and a lot of vehicles do travel that far. That's the distance a lot of fleet leasing etc is based on. However, the official average takes into account the significant number of very low usage vehicles which brings the average figures down.

Total petrol (not including diesel, LPG, kero, fuel oil etc) consumption is somewhere in the order of 1000 litres per head of population per annum. That includes children etc who (hopefully) don't drive cars.

As for me, petrol prices don't bother me overly much since I only buy about 350 litres of the stuff each year at most and I could cut that down quite a lot if I had too. It's a major expense for a lot of people, but not for me personally.

likewise - as opposed to nearly everyone i know, i walk almost everywhere (weather permitting). work, shopping, entertainment, the normal day to day stuff. too many people i know cant be bothered, or supposedly dont have the time.
the car is there, and is used for the big fortnightly grocery run, taking the kids to their activities (kids cant walk as far and be expected to function as well), trips to friends or an occasional country drive - thats about it.

driven about 40000 km in nearly 5 years.

im so glad fuel prices have almost zero influence over my life.
