Now you are talking 50 years ago, the unions and politics got very intertwined in the mid 1980's and conflicts of interests fostered members disenchantment and the union has never recovered since.
The days of 'Walk out Wally Palmer" are long gone, those firebrand organisers that fought for members conditions were replaced by upwardly mobile, or politically motivated operators, who tended to decide which was the best horse to back in a dispute and the unions have never recovered since, once trust is lost it is difficult to re establish it.
On a personal note Wally was a really nice bloke for a pom, he looked like Iggy Pop with his long hair parted in the middle and had great sense of humour.
