That might be when Mt Pinatubo blew its stack in 1991.

I was in Darwin at the time and the sky had a milky white tint for some time after the eruption. A slight reduction in solar insolation during the 1991/92 wet season may have been in part responsible for that wet season being a poor one.
 
I have booked my business class tickets for the whole Trainspotter tribe to koʊpənheɪɡən via Air Asia. First stop Singapore which is not affected by this terrible ashen glass that falls from the sky. From there I will brave the Mallacca Straits in a luxury super yacht and do battle with untold pirates of ill repute. Short stroll across the Arabian Sea via Mogadishu and then onto the Red Sea and up the Suez Canal. From there the Mediterranean Sea beckons me onto Monaco whereby my private Bell Ranger helicopter will carry me and the family a mere 837 miles over Germany and the Baltic Sea to Copenhagen. I will await the fedora hat in the lobby of the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, which I will greet you with the customary secret handshake and a box of Habanos Cuban Cigars. Viva le Copenagen comrade !

And that is what distinguishes Fellows of the Institute of Ash from that motley rabble of Warmers.
Class and good taste in the finer things of life.
I am attempting to get copyright on the word "Ash" and also on the word "Soot".
Institute and Volcano have unfortunately been disallowed as Economy Class passengers use those words freely.

Thanks Spooly. It is truly frightening what the Earth can do if it decides to put on a turn.

I live 2 hours from the Taupo volcano which is the sight of the largest known supervolcanic eruption in the last 70,000 years. It made a nice lake to play on, but if she decides to get serious again ===>>

Dear Julia,

The Institute of Ash Nominations Committee at a teleconference into the Ross Island Hotel last night was asked to appoint Quentin Bryce as Patron of the IOA.

We contacted her in Dubai where she is Ash stricken and being sheikhed by a stalk.

A fight erupted in the Public Bar as to whether Quentin was a male or female name and the upshot of it all was that I nominated you as Patron, and as the teleconference dropped out due to Ash, you were voted in as Patron, if you would be so kind as to accept.

(as long as it doesn't involve extended sojourns at the Public Bar of the Ross Island Hotel.)

PS Would you be kind enough to outline my duties/job description? I don't think I've ever been a Patron before.
 

Duties of Patron, Institute of Ash (Incorporated Lichtenstein)

To behave in all ways and at all times with decorum.
To represent The IOA at meetings of Heads of State.
To be able to sit in a Rolls Royce without looking out of place.
Never to be photographed wearing a bicycle helmet.
Not to have a Financial Adviser.
To represent the Ash position in forums as required.

I believe you fulfil all the criteria Julia. We can only afford to pay you $80,000 pa with free First Class Travel ( Ash allowing) anywhere in the world.

Its much less than Al Gore got, but we are not a shonky operation like Global Warming Inc. We care. ( that is our Motto)

I can assure you that as you are a lady, you would not be expected to front up at the public bar of the Ross Island Hotel.

btw, it was finally resolved prior to the arrival of the police that Quentin was a lady's name as there was a ballerina of the same name someone said..

Thank you, gg. I believe I can fulfil the duties of Patron without difficulty.
In particular, a bicycle helmet has never appeared on my head and never will.

The stipend is most kind, and (unlike the example set by our Governor-General) I will be happy to spend this on attire such as befits my position.

Now, on another note, the following letters to "The Australian" today amused me:
