In defending the controversial plan to dredge Port Phillip bay, Vic Premier John Brumby called Adelaide a 'back water'. You have to love it when pollie's forget to be PC and state their deep felt prejudice.

Being from Melbourne and having been to Adelaide (twice), I think it is a lovely city. Pity about the football teams and homicidal maniacs though. Oh yes and sorry for stealing most of the water.

VICTORIAN Premier John Brumby has branded Adelaide a "backwater" - but Premier Mike Rann says his counterpart's outrageous cross-border attack stems from insecurity.

Mr Brumby said unless Victoria pushed ahead with a controversial plan to deepen the channel in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne would end up as a "backwater" like Adelaide.

What is even better is that a majority of croweaters agree!!

I personally don't think it is that bad a place...just a little quiet for my liking!!

For a moment I thought you said Black Water! Then realised you were talking about Adelaide, not Sydney ...

I thought it was a hoot, we need a little friendly roasting between cities if you ask me.

3 words for Mr. Brumby.

pot
kettle
black

Right, I'm off.

yeah i was thinking of posting a thread like this !!

i am sick to earth we the arrogance of the Victorians to tell you the truth, especially when it comes to sports

not only did they steal our grand prix, they also like to stick it up us in sport.. thats when they win

well this year our power and crow boys will be back to dominate

they wont be stealing our defense projects and thats right .. who has the mining boom !!

Like it really matters what Brumby says , bl##dy Jeff Kennett rates higher than him , not that media Mike is some glory boy , but from TV Week to detroyer contracts is pretty impressive , especially to have gotten past the Vic. tender .
Sure we've got a mining boom , so has W.A. , that's where the real action is at present .

I'm sorry but I'm one of those that believe AFL still means VFL and always will , but when it comes to real Victorians , I think they're chit hot , polite , helpful and courteous . Not too keen on those schnitzel sandwiches though , I was crook for days after eating one .

We go to Melbourne every couple of years , just so the missus can go clothes shopping , we have a ball each time and probably always will .

But if you want laid back it's this side of the border .

You want to talk water , well up the road from us , is Morgan/Cadell , that bend on the river has hundreds tonnes of salt go past it each hour !

Bushman
Even Lindsay Fox is saying it's a mistake to dredge the bludy bay.

Did you enjoy Brumby's spin that "the vacuum cleaner (dredge) is just like spring cleaning the bay" (paraphrased)
Talk about spin lol.

Tell you what, you wouldn't dare stir up Sydney Harbour. Generations of industrial waste.

It is a ridiculous environmental risk if you ask me. There is the plume of sediment that will disrupt a fragile ecosystem, a 150 years worth of toxic sludge at the mouth of the Yarra that will spread around the bay, changes to the tidal inflow and a host of other potentially adverse consequences. Why not just bite the bullet and develop the naturally deep port of Hastings? They could set aside the mega bucks they are going to spend on the unneccessary desalination plant in Wonthaggi to do so.

Makes you wish we still had Jeff as our Premier. I mean all he built was a big, ugly shed.

nothing wrong with a little bit of cross border rivalry when it comes to sports
and events but what their premier said was disrespectful and as a south aussie i felt affended ,its a great place to live and with a population of only a million or so we fight out of our weight division on a lot of fronts, maybe brumby should tour the barrosa,go fishing in pt.lincoln and then stick his head down one of our new mines up north right as i kick his **** down into it

lol -
I'd bet London to a brick that some pollie has a stake ( eg property investment) that depends on Port Phillip developing

You are aware I'm sure that fish caught in Sydney Harbour were recently found to be seriously poisonous with respect to all manner of heavy metals. Homebush Bay is an absolute disaster.

In fact one of the reasons (there were others) that the Glebe Island Bridge (Anzac Bridge) was built as such a massive and expensive single span (345m) is that a lower bridge with multiple piers would have caused too much disruption to the settled sludge.

Jeff? Big ugly shed? - lol
Are we talking Federation Sq ? (Ps I'm a queenslander living in NSW ok?)

Dont forget stealing the Gand Prix from Adelaide -
and scaring the bejesus out of the ducks every year lol

I really can't think of any good thing that Melbourne has that Adelaide doesn't apart from professional sport. Sport seems to be Melbourne's only real strong point compared to the other state capitals. Adelaide has just about everything else without a lot of the bad points.

Why not just bite the bullet and develop the naturally deep port of Hastings?

its called politics - between hastings and the main receivers of these imports (importers & suburban factories) are things called electorates - marginal electorates who vote according to who has a better haircut, who has been to church recently, who promises to block the building of vital infrastructure, not those silly issues like health, education and jobs.

developing hastings would undoubtedly lose the government power in victoria, and so the better decision is to dredge, to assure continued power in spring street.

nothing ever changes.

p.s. adelaide - nice place to visit if you enjoy NOTHING.
