i don't see any issue with it.
there are generally 2 ways to buy these sorts of products - you either go the ETF route (thru a normal broker) or the managed fund route (direct from Vanguard themselves). it's the same underlying assets, just different ways to get that exposure. not sure which exact product you're looking for but they should be offering a choice of ETF/managed fund for it.
the latter has always been more expensive for investors who are looking to buy decent sized (>$20K) parcels at a time. as far as i'm aware, it's only good for people who want to make small and/or frequent purchases (eg. $500) as the former would otherwise result in the minimum brokerage taking a huge chunk (percentage wise) out of their capital, but the latter doesn't incur brokerage.
from what i remember the difference in MER between two products with the same underlying assets was a lot bigger than it is now, eg. a few years ago VAS was 0.14% but the equivalent managed fund was something like 0.50%. that spread has always been there because the fund incurs overheads in maintaining customer accounts, which they don't have to do for customers who buy via the ETF (the central depository or a custodian broker serves those functions instead).
it's now 0.1% for the ETF vs 0.16% for the equivalent managed fund. there is this new 0.2% maintenance fee you mention, which i don't remember being there in the past, but the spread has narrowed significantly. so if anything, it would seem to be slightly better under the new platform. however i've always gone the ETF route myself, so there could be something about the managed fund route that i've overlooked.
