Unread message indicators disappearing

Joe,

I've been having a problem for quite a while where I'll come in to read the new messages, which are all highlighted as usual, but sometimes after reading and perhaps replying to only a few, all the indicators disappear from the other unread messages so that I have to then start looking at the last post dates and times to see what else is new.

I'm using Firefox and the problem seems to be time related, mostly happening after I've spent a bit of time composing and then posting a message. It happens here quite regularly, but I've never noticed it happen on Somersoft which also uses vBulletin.

Any idea what might be causing this?

GP, will look into this for you and hopefully get it fixed ASAP.

Cheers!

Joe,

Thanks. It's not a biggie, but is a little inconvenient.

Another change I've noticed (again not a biggie) is the loss of the ability to place the cursor over a topic and be able to read the first few lines of the first post without needing to open the thread. This function seemed to disappear a few weeks back

Cheers

hmmm... not wanting to be pedantic, but I've noticed this too.

Is is possible to have the same "highlight" feature over the last post as well??

The thread preview feature has now been re-enabled. Sorry about that.

GP, unfortunately you may have to wait until I upgrade to the new version of the software until that works properly.

This is what the vbulletin people had to say:

vBulletin 3.0 has a cookie / session based mark read system. It works by showing threads that have been updated since your last visit as new, after your session expires, they are marked as read.

So yes, it does seem to be a time factor. By the time you finish a really long post, your previous session may have expired. I will have look to see if I can alter the default session length.

I plan on upgrading in the first few months of next year, once they have ironed out any bugs. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience in the meantime.

Joe,

No problem. As I said, it's only a bit of an annoyance, nothing that's causing me to pull my hair out

Cheers,

GP, after giving it some more thought, it might pay to have ASF opened in another tab or browser window if you are putting together a long post as hitting refresh, or interacting with the software in any way will maintain the session.

When you are replying to a thread or creating a new one you are simply typing into a text area and not interacting with the software. That's why it thinks you have disappeared. When you hit submit and start clicking on threads etc it thinks you have come back and resets the 'New Posts'

Thanks, Joe.

The problem's not so much that my messages are that long, but I write quite a few of them at work and often get interrupted while I'm doing so.

Damned work interfering with my forum activities

Joe,

Just wondering if it's possible yet to increase this timeout?

It still annoys me a bit, as I sometimes can't help being interrupted while composing messages.

GP,

I will look into this for you this afternoon and see if I can come up with a fix.

Is there anyone else that is getting timed out and having to log in again after stepping away from the PC for a while? If so, can you please let me know in this thread.

Thanks.

Joe,

I don't get logged out (that I'm aware of - or perhaps I'm logged back in automatically when I post), it's just that after I post, all the new message indicators that were there before have gone, so I can't easily see any more which threads still have new messages.

Cheers,
GP

GP,

I have set the timeout period to 30 minutes now, so let me know how you go.

The good news is I will be upgrading to the latest version of this forum software at some point this year (hopefully soon) and the new version keeps track of things like post read a lot better. The only thing stopping me from doing it now is there are quite a few modifications (hacks) I have made to this site that would need to be rewritten or reworked.

Anyway, let me know if you notice a difference.

Cheers!
Joe
