I was looking to put a short position on AWB and BHP today but IB doesn't have any stock available to short with :( How does the available pooling of shortable shares work? Would another broker be likely to have shares available? Does IB generally have a good supply of shares compared to other brokers?

Check the shortable list of AUS stocks which is available from their website. I tried shorting last Fri but none were available.

Thanks for the reply. I've checked the list and I can't find one single ASX top 200 company I can short. Are other brokers better to short with or is IB king and they are all out, that's the way it is?

I can't say for sure, but the last time i saw the shortable list, there were like 70 stocks to choose from. Most of them were mining companies. Maybe the stocks do change so best to do a frequent refresh of the list when it's available and my guess is the list will be available tomorrow again.

I think it's about 127 stocks including the financials. Maybe 70 without the fins?

Anyway I went and had a look at http://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/trading/ViewShortableStocks.php?cntry=australia&tag=Australia&ib_entity=llc&ln=

and it says "There are no shortable stocks available at this time". Ahh fark it!

Would another ASX broker be better do you think? Or may try and another market altogether.

Have not tried shorting with other ASX brokers before, they are just too expensive. Another alternative would be CFDS with the types like IG, etc. Perhaps other ASFers have better ideas on shorting Asx stocks?
