Been trying out IB's charting for the past 4 weeks or so.
Hey Azza, awesome to hear from someone who knows what I'm on about when I mention the name Don Kaufman!
Neil Swanson from IB was pretty helpful and assures me that IB are the best in the business. I thought I was just getting a sales pitch over the phone so I sent him a pretty detailed email describing exactly what it is we need along with photos attached and he took the time to read it and assure me that the IB platform could do what we need.
I'm eager to set up an account and give it a go.
If anyone else is keen shoot Neil Swanson at IB brokers an email if you have any q's nswanson@interactivebrokers.com
Or make sure to put his name in the application where it asks how you heard of IB. He did take the time out to understand what it is we need.
Anyways, Onward and upward!
Ive leased optionvue 7 with trade intergration with trackdata.
Cost 199/month
What a great piece of software. Blows TOS away. Charts are very basic, which suits me, dont look at them much anyway. However the option analysis is extremely good.
Hello psimmo,
Can you elaborate on this a bit more?
I'm familiar with OptionVue7 and I tried the free trial however I thought it had a few limitations which I've raised with their Australian Rep who was meant to get back to me with answers to my questions but he still hasn't.
Has it go the ability to BETA weight?
Cheers.
Yes it has the ability to BETA weight.
Thanks "artist" for giving the link to Peter Hoadly's Option package as I am looking for the future survival of my options business before time comes that I no longer be able to use TOS, it's possible.
Hi danon,
Have you used Hoadly's yet?
Interactive Brokers however is MUCH cheaper...
I've been thinking about migrating to IB as well but since I only trade RUT, I don't really pay that much brokers fee (at least not yet).. I heard IB charge you for real-time data is that correct?
I found this thread as I was also hoping to join TOS for their Options analysis tools, specifically analysis by numbers, and was disappointed to discover they no longer service accounts for a number of countries (I emailed them and they say it is to do with their business model - read 'too expensive').
After reading through the posts last night I remembered a confirmation email for some Options analysis tool that has been sitting in my Inbox for months waiting for me to confirm. I came across it when looking for software that had Options scanning features. I never investigated it further but for some reason held onto the email. The site has changed from what I remember, and looks even better. I think it was pretty new at the time I found it. It's time for me to look into it as it looks like just what I need:
http://analyzetrade.com/
Then I went through my browser bookmarks and found some others:
OptionsOracle
http://www.samoasky.com/protfolio/
OptionsOracle is a freebie, but seems to work intermittently. Although I found various sites and forums where it was highly touted, I was not able to use it because of some error message that could not be fixed due to lack of a support team. It could be up and running now.
I've had a look at my bookmarks of other software I tagged for future use, and found the following (I am not sure of their full capabilities, but am sure at least some of what we need can be found amongst them):
http://www.optionstar.com/
http://www.optionetics.com.au/products/platinum/
This site also lists some great tools that may be helpful:

If you are after TWS and want an Aussie broker, there are several who have it such as Capital 19 and Halifax. I don't like the TWS design. It's a typical geek design, cramped and overloaded with information, and not intuitive to use. (I can say that cos I used to be a geek. Also, the black background with bright text can be hard on the eyes. One day these tools will be easy to use and nice to look at as well as highly functional. OptionVue gets my vote on that account, but it's so expensive.
This thread is getting long in the tooth, so maybe by now you have all found good alternatives to TOS. If not, I hope one of these sites can help you.
Good day all,
I see that many of ex TOS users have found IB as a good substitute. I am currently exploring IB for options trading and like many others have found that discovering the various features of IB to be a steep learning curve.
My question here is two features in TOS that I am struggling to find in IB.
Could someone please post as to where in IB could you find the TOS features namely "IV Percentile" of an option and "Probability of ITM" or "Probability of OTM" of an option's strike.
Thanks and best regards
Hey aarbee,
You're not wrong, TWS is a pain in the a#$ for serious option traders.
I can't answer your questions but you did bring this thread back up for me which made me notice the previous post!
If it weren't for TWS's Risk Navigator (which has nothing on TOS, not even close), then I would not have been able to trade the style I learned from TOS. Even with the TWS Risk Navigator, I am limited to the way I can manage a large inventory of small positions. It just wasn't designed by ex-market makers and risk managers, like ThinkOrSwim is.
Good luck!
Aarbee, I can't comment too much on the IB platform as I haven't used it yet. I trade through the optionsxpress platform.
My style of trading is mainly selling puts, calls, vertical spreads & iron condors.
I use the dough.com platform(same guys who created TOS) to do my initial analysis to find prob ITM, IV rank, earnings and ideas etc. It's free to sign up for the demo version, but since it's linked to TD ameritrade, they don't accept Australian clients.
When I"m ready to place an order, on the optionsxpress order entry screen, there is a button called "trade calc" which generates your profit and loss chart and your probabilities ITM/OTM, shows your proceeds/requirements, greeks and IV before you place the trade, allowing you to adjust your orders.
I find the commission fees will hurt you if you trade small (1 lots) as they have a $14.95 minimum cost each way, but overall it's a good platform to start from.
