Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed the sudden outbursts of 7-11 stores pretty much everywhere?

I was walking around the CBD the other day and realised there were three within a few blocks of eachother. Then I realised they have now taken over all Mobil petrol stations (although the petrol is still being supplied by Mobil).

Does anyone have an explanation for the apparent popularity of these stores? From what I can see, most of the items they sell have a significant mark up. For example, a bottle of Gatorade/Powerade costs like $4.50, whereas you could get the same for $2 from Coles or Woolies.

My friend once said their strategy was to get people into their store a few times, by offering a select range of cheap products (like their $1 coffees) which is supposed to get people 'accustomed' to the store, and then hope they will realise the 'convenience' and be willing to pay extra for it.

They are kind to inebriates.

It's just another situation where a major chain has pushed out small business. There have always been numerous "corner shops" and the like in every city but now even they have become a major chain. City convenience stores and 7-11 seem to be the main ones in most states (7-11 is a global chain) whilst in SA there's K Food Express and Adelaide Convenience stores all over the city. Even in Hobart we've got a City Convenience store at the old gasworks now.

The only real problem I've had is that I naturally assumed at first that 7-11 in Melbourne was a bottle shop since 9/11 is a bottle shop chain here in Tas (at least I think it's a local chain not a national one?) and was a bit surprised to find that 7-11 is entirely different...
