People were saying it can leach chemicals as well, is that true?



Can't recycle that easily. My mate drives trucks and any old solar panels get shipped to India. I think they just use them.

A minority of solar panels contain some rather nasty stuff but most are relatively benign.

The strength is all in the frame and glass. Once that's shattered that's it, the rest has basically no structural strength at all.

Here's a photo taken at work many years ago that shows what happens when a solar panel's well and truly shattered.

It was originally a very normal looking solar panel complete with frame and so on. Glass is still there, just shattered to something resembling small pebbles. Structural strength in that condition is comparable to thick paper, it'll barely support itself and curls up.

Not individual home but good enough for a small town.40y of asset, etc.
If your community has a sewage plant, it could have one, and if you have an old gold or coal underground mine, you hit the jackpot....
For an individual/farm you add the cost of a tank.
I am amazed at why we do not have more of these here.
The advantage vs batteries banks for grid storage on a small scale are so big:
We can build the lot here, skillset matching our mining workforce, plenty of reusable mines shafts and space for tanks easy to connect for small remote place,does not burn or pollute, safe, all tested technologies, does not consume water(close circuit) and can be used for cooling...

Better than these discussed, but not seen, small reactors coming one day : the boat anchors, plug it onto the grid, crew provided: add vodka, some gold or yuan and Vladimir is your uncle!!

They put them in the ground as no environmental regulations there along with the panels cannot be recycled as yet
 
Net zero benefits
its net zero idea of the people who peddle this crap

the dozen plus commodities dug from the ground to manufacture a panel, doesnt include the distruction of the land and, tailends toxic waste from the refining of each material, then the production waste, the panels are made in China and India for a reason then, when the panels are installed, you have the mass amount of land cleared & transmission lines installed all to produce little inconsistant amount of power.
the only people who benefit from this crap are mining companies & governments and people who work in the mining industry aka the FIFO bogan
 
The conversation about commercial solar farms vs agricultural needs often throws more heat than light on the subject. But what if both ventures could co exists on the same land and through natural synergies create substantial additional overall profits ?

This is another story of how running sheep in a solar farm improves the productivity of both ventures in numerous ways.



... Everyone benefits

Sheep-based agrivoltaics is a particularly good symbiotic system where every participant benefits, from the animals and farmers to the local community and environment.

The solar panels shade the sheep and make them more comfortable on hot days, while fences around the solar farms protect them from predators. The grass shaded by solar panels also grows faster than unshaded grass, so there is more food for the sheep and, in turn humans, than naked pastures with no solar shade.

The benefits extend to energy production as well. The grid enjoys more solar power, which is the least expensive electricity in history, because the grazing sheep keep the solar panels clear of weeds.

In addition, solar farm owners and investors save money on vegetation management by avoiding the risks of mowing (which can damage panels with flying debris) and the costs and environmental harms of herbicides.

Solar shepherds make more money than traditional shepherds do for three main reasons. According to Glassdoor, shepherds in Canada normally make $58,000/year, while solar shepherds can expect to make two to three times as much.

Solar shepherds benefit from increased grass for their sheep, they don’t have to lease pastures and, most importantly, they earn bonus pay for solar farm vegetation management, which comes from contracts with the solar farm owners.

The advantages of solar shepherding ripples out to local communities as well. Solar farms generate significant tax revenue, often enough to fully fund local schools in small farming communities. Residents also gain access to locally produced lamb and sheep meat, along with high-paying local employment.

There are also benefits from an environmental perspective. An earlier study I did with sustainability engineering professor Robert Handler showed that agrivoltaics sheep pastures were twice as land-use efficient than maintaining separate systems for solar energy and sheep grazing. They also outperformed conventional sheep farming and grid electricity systems by 280 to 894 per cent.
 
There is another excellent story on Renew Energy. The RACV is launching a solar and battery VPP (Virtual Power Plant) . The RACV is already very big into solar power and this project would encourage business to become partners in a sharing their energy inputs and storage capacities and make a profit on the deal.

Australia’s original motoring club continues its move into renewable energy with the launch of its own solar and battery backed virtual power plant – and it is inviting businesses to join.

The RACV started its virtual power plant (VPP) using the solar and battery systems at its Torquay and Inverloch resorts to make money through Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) and arbitraging in wholesale energy markets.

......Virtual power plants are yet to really take off in Australia, although there are moves afoot to make them more appealing.

In December, the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) published a rule change that allows VPPs, including those made up of consumer energy resources such as rooftop solar and electric vehicles, to compete with large energy generators within the National Energy Market.

By bringing behind the meter resources into the NEM, not only could these be better integrated into the planning and operating of the grid but the AER also speculated that it could be worth $1.4-1.8 billion in savings from 2025 to 2050.
