This came in my partners email and I couldn't resist posting it. Those who have to weave creative fantasies to move whatever stuff they have to sell might appreciate it.
Today we celebrate a milestone in fabric innovation. It used to be that everytime you bought a quarter of a yard of fabric, you got a strip 44 inches long by 9 inches wide. There was nothing else to be done. Sewists and quilters alike mourned and moaned, plagued by a lack of more usefully-shaped ¼ yard cuts. It was a dark time.
Then, on April 27, 1973 Sandra O’Luxembourg of Wilmington, Pennsylvania had an epiphany. With a few minutes to kill at her little fabric shop, Sandra unrolled a bolt of fabric on her sewing table. She cut a yard of fabric. Then, after a brief hesitation, she cut it in half once lengthwise and once widthwise. She froze as she saw what she had done. There was a palpable buzz in the air. Customers started to gather around to see what was happening. A passing newspaper reporter sensed history in the making and popped into the store. Dogs started barking in the street. Then, as the crowd watched with bated breath, Sandra slowly picked up one piece of the yard she had cut into quarters and held in her hands the world’s first FAT QUARTER! Quilters swooned, crafters gasped, and practically the whole town rushed the shop with fistfuls of cash, clamoring for this, the world’s first precut. Since that day, the world has been forever changed and our lives have been immeasurably better in every conceivable way.
Now, although this entire story is actually a big, fat lie that I completely made up, I have a feeling that it is basically what happened the day someone first thought up the fat quarter. And since its invention has never been properly celebrated, today I’m paying to this endlessly useful little cut of cloth:
