No .. we need the media to keep those in power accountable and not abuse their power.. more power to the media.

This is what free country is all about.

Imagine they charge you for something and if they cant get enough evident, they decided let put this sucker down to Terrorism charge and they are out of the spot light and you are in a black hole. You wouldn't want that happen to you or anyone else.

Police love blackout and turn it into a police state, that give them unbelievable power to manipulate and to abuse.
you only need to live in communist country to see what sort of power these guys get. They are above the law

Mick is an idiot.
He is so stupid he was was conned out of lots of money, by a conman who knew he was a federal police commissioner.
Retitle the thread to "replace Mick Keelty".

Adding to his stupidity were recent comments he made blaming the media for beating up the case against Haneef.
Yet Keelty was front and centre doling selective quotes from records of interview that were not only sometimes out of context, in the case of translations they were plain and simple wrong.
Haneef's case remains under investigation by Keelty.
He doesn't have a shred of evidence to suggest anything besides the fact Haneef has relatives that are probably more stupid than Keelty.
The longer Keelty maintains his charade against Haneef, the more stupid he will look.

Apart from that, what the hell has Keelty got to do with suicide bombers?

But how can you preserve our freedoms if terrorists are blowing themselves up and people with disabilities are used as cannon fodder for their aims?

The Bali bombs and bombers are a prime example. Australians there were just having a holiday, and poof, they are dead or maimed.

By not invading their country for a start.

They gave the viet cong the same wrap when the American invade vietnam.
These are bad guys, they murder and kill.

Look at Vietnam now are they war mongering people American made them out to be? Are they harming anyone?

Do you see neutral Country like Sweden get attacked? not likely, these are desperate people and they do bad stuff no doubt about it. I'm not supporting their bombing and attack but we got to question ourselves why they hate us in the first place.

Not much different from people blaming society and government for their bad deeds but never blame themselves for not doing enough to become good citizen.

Thanks Rederob,

Mick Keelty is the head of the AFP, the organisation tasked with keeping us safe from these terrorists and prosecuting them if and when they are caught.

My point is that we are in a conflict with these guys and we are fighting an uneven battle. Our freedoms imo are more at risk from these bombers than from a sensible monitored increase in powers to the AFP.

Its difficult not to appear a fumbler when the press are down your neck 24/7

That is crab, George Bush and Blair use this excuse to go to war and you certainly fall for it.

There dozen of countries that has freedom and Christian values are these guys blow themselves up in these countries? so why not them but UK, USA and Australia?

Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Belgium you name it there are more country than you can count.
 

I can't agree with that ROE.

I've tried to find a link that has all the countries where they have blown themselves up, for completeness, but Indonesia, Singapore and Spain, come to mind.

They have also caused havoc elsewhere.

My main point is though that Mick Keelty the head of the AFP deserves our support in catching these people.

I say we "let them win", as many freedom-worshippers seem hell bent against.

Fight dirty at their own level; I'm all for major abuses of power - torture, war, lack of trial, lack of rights.

These people do not represent a country in any legally recognised war; therefore, they hold none of the rights / responsibilities of a formal war.

Terrorism is as bad as high treason, & many countries execute for that.

If it were a formal war, & an enemy soldier was in our streets posing as a civilian; we would have the legal rights to shoot without question. No trial, no arrests, no media interference, nothing of that sort. I believe the same rights should apply now.
 
I can't agree - why sacrifice some freedoms to protect others? Doesn't make sense to me.

I guess I believe it's better to be a living coward, than a dead hero.

The freedoms we sacrifice in times of war, will eventually be returned. We don't live in a free society, there can be no such thing. It would be anarchy.

We have laws, certain things are illegal. Drugs are illegal, one could argue that Marijuana is no worse than alcohol, yet it's banned. The government has a responsibility to not only protect people from others, but to protect people from themselves, this means removing freedoms.


We have the illusion of freedom, nothing more.

Summary - We need security sure, but it ain't gonna happen (IMO) by the current anti-terror laws, ( arguably counterproductive in many directions) - nor by expanding them and letting the police imprison people and stop the media talking about it .

These sentiments are fine if you have an enemy who uses reason and whom you would hope to persuade by reasonable argument to see your point or on the other hand be pesuaded to cede your point or come to a reasonable compromise.

My point is that these people are unreasonable, will not respond to rational or other argument and are intent on destroying the West.

They aim to achieve that by blowing themselves, and people who lack competence e.g. the mentally unwell, up., to achieve their irrational aims.

My thoughts are that Mick Keelty should still be made accountable for his actions but given more leeway in investigating crimes and possible crimes against Australia.

So why don't we ban alcohol, cigarettes, double cheeseburgers and about a thousand other things that can hurt or damage health if abused?

Or should personal responsibility be a part of the equation?

Why do Australians need a nanny state? Why do we need the government to not only provide for us from cradle to grave but also protect us from ourselves? Are we really that incapable of running our own lives?
 

It is human nature to destroy ourselves, so the answer there is yes.
You only need to look around to see the answer there; in our current lifestyle we need to be protected.

Heh, that slowly is happening Guru. Smoking is now illegal in public indoor places, in pubs, work places, & many outdoor areas.
Alcohol is illegal out in public ... at beaches, around shopping centers, basically anywhere but restaurants, & in your own home

Fast food chains are now required to provide fact sheets, use lower-cholesterol oils, & there is growing pressure for the government to curb obesity. I can honestly see fast food being banned in 20 years. Think about it, the medical bills the government is going to foot from this in the future ... much cheaper to ban fattening foods.

In addition, surely here at a stock-forum, people are able to pick up the very obvious trend here? Gosh, if bull trends were this obvious I'd be a billionaire.
 
The coalition of the willing use sane people to do their killing...Australian SAS troops coming home bragging about their kill rate and suggesting that that they should all get medals (briefly reported in the West Australian newspaper).
I am sure if you think about it that you will realise that extreme actions get extreme responses...too many extremists around...nothing rational or sane involved at all.
Killers to the right of us, killers to the left us ...all for oil? If you get involved in home invasions and then start killing members of the household, I am sure that you will get an extreme response.
Who was it that said that totalitarian regimes are controlled by the bludgeon,and that democracies are controlled by propaganda?
Cannot remember, but it sounds pretty right to me.
