Hi, being the eclectic brains trust you all are, I knew I should ask this question here.

I'm doing a short trek soon and would love to take a gift to a lovely lady who lives near the Thai / Myanmar border. This lady, Vannee, has taught me some delicious dishes and I'd like to pass on something to show my gratitude.

It doesn't have to be food related but it does have to be small, not easily broken and not too heavy.
I was thinking of a container of wild bush jam or similar.
Can anyone think of something uniquely Oz that fits the criteria?

that's a gem of an idea..I remember once meeting some Canadians and once they realised I was Australian, they could stop asking me why we put beets on burgers.. They were absolutely perplexed..

There are varieties of chutney style bush jams that the Aboriginal people make. Some of them are quite spicy too, which she might appreciate. I took them to Sweden as gifts one time.

If her name is Vannee. I think she is Thai and she will probably like Vegemite from Australia. but you need to tell her that we put Vegemite on bread and butter.

The taste of vegemite is similar to the taste of shrimp paste in Thailand.

This is only my opinion. I am Thai who has been living in Melbourne nearly 4 years now.

It's a lovely idea. I don't think it matters all that much exactly what you take her. She will be delighted at the knowledge you have been thoughtful enough to take her something.

How about some Australian nuts? e.g. macadamias? There are lots of attractive gift boxes around if that doesn't seem too "touristy".

Lots of uniquely Australian gifts,including Aboriginal food,pot poury?Art,love their Aboriginal paintings,small and easily portable.
Anyway I`m sure that you will find something there.
 
In Cairns the whole tourism industry statistics are based on the sales of Tim Tams at the downtown Woolworths. Lower sales, lower tourism numbers lol. True that Cairns Woolworths sells more Tim Tams than any other supermarket in the entire country. Do not under estimate their appeal to people from Asian countries..They love them.

so that ? who knows
she in turn will come back to you ..?
maybe?

(could also treat it as a message stick
plenty of wood there to carve a picture, message etc -
eg someone lying in a hammock to suit the shape
a banana maybe? lol
