Today's update from SpaceWeather.com -

THREE DAYS, THREE FLARES: For the third day in a row, active sunspot 1261 has unleashed a strong M-class solar flare. The latest blast at 0357 UT on August 4th registered M9.3 on the Richter Scale of Flares, almost crossing the threshold into X-territory (X-flares are the most powerful kind). Stay tuned for updates.

INCOMING CLOUDS: At least two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are now en route to Earth, propelled toward us by eruptions in the magnetic canopy of sunspot 1261 on August 2nd and 3rd. Analysts at the GSFC Space Weather Lab have just produced a new 3-D model of the advancing CMEs.

The CME clouds are due to hit sometime today with likely additional impact from the near X class solar flare. Some interesting guff related to this phenomenon, which is starting to ramp up in frequency since the "big sleep"...

NASA has recently discovered that the earth’s magnetic field contains a hole, which is ten times larger than they previously believed. The magnetosphere shelters us from solar flares, but the hole is now four times the size of the earth.

National Geographic magazine reported that scientists said, "An unexpected, thick layer of solar particles inside Earth's magnetic field suggests there are huge breaches in our planet's solar defenses."

The article went on to say that during the next solar flares in 2012 these holes will be responsible for tremendous solar storms. David Sibeck, a space-weather expert at NASA said, "So if all of this is true, it should be that we're in for a tough time in the next 11 years."

Maybe the flares have started earlier than expected?

Tin hat on for the next 12 years....

Update on the 3rd & biggest flare eruption...

Moving at an estimated speed of 1950 km/s, this CME is expected to sweep up two earlier CMEs already en route. Analysts at the GSFC Space Weather Lab say the combined cloud should reach Earth on August 5th at 13:55 UT plus or minus 7 hours: "The impact on Earth is likely to be major. The estimated maximum geomagnetic activity index level Kp is 7 (Kp ranges from 0 - 9). The flanks of the CME may also impact STEREO A, Mars and Mercury/MESSENGER."

Expected arrival Eastern Standard Time is sometime between approx. 9pm last night to 11am this morning. http://spaceweather.com/

I find it sorta ironic that the first big tsunami wave of what I expect to become GFCII hit last night too...

And what's the guess that this will be used by pro carbon tax people that this (like the floods, etc) are all part of global warming and it's all man's fault and we should be taxed even higher...

And if it's man's fault, hopefully women, children and animals are exempt...:D

Although, on second thoughts, basilio posted an article relating to the 1859 solar flare, so it can't be anything to do with us as life was very different 152 years ago.

Interesting point and good thread Aussiejeff.

... btw (as I have often mentioned) I don't believe in (random) coincidences. There is always a reason why things happen. Cause and effect.

While a few are aware of the effects on our weather, there is much yet to be understood about the cosmos and it's effects on Earth and animal, especially human behaviour in particular.

Interesting thread. I think the natural world always gives signs. Like global warming for example - it's not that it's caused by man-made emissions, but there's every chance it's a reflection of man's collective unconscious.

On a broad scale, it looks like man is going to have to evolve really quickly to survive as a species. There's no God up there who could care less if man lives or dies off completely, so forget that. When I say evolve, I mean evolve beyond the 'cause and effect' level of existence. 'Cause and effect' is basically what karma is. And karma is a real bitch until you realize it's not real. To come to that realization takes massive leaps of (inner) evolution. While humans continue to live at that 'cause and effect' level, all wealth and prosperity and happiness must, MUST be balanced by depression, poverty and hard times. Life's a bitch in that way. Things are cycling with greater and greater intensity, in both directions.

A call to arms!

Glad I did not notice anything bad, maybe except felt bit sleepy around midday.

No matter what we do in 5.5 billion years life on Earth, or what's left of it, will be wiped out by run out of fuel Sun that will expand and possibly melt the planet Earth, or at least catastrophically increase temperature.

Cest la vie!

We are all made from star stuff, primal elements created billions of years ago (hydrogen, helium, oxygen etc) - the original building blocks of the Universe!

So we eventually convert back to star stuff atoms when we "die". "Death" is simply the first stage of conversion of our organisms back to the elemental building blocks. Our atoms don't die - only stars can fuse them into other elements - it's just our human conscious state that is "no more".

I find that totally eloquent and comforting. :)

Champers for all!

:partyman:

PS: You should watch professor Brian Cox's final episode of The Amazing Universe on ABC1, if you haven't seen the previous 3 episodes (might be on Iview). Prof. Cox is an eminently knowledgable young guy with a background in Physics & Astrophysics who I have a lot of respect for. He is much like a younger version of Prof. Carl Sagan, who was without a doubt one of the greatest geniuses of our time.

It hit just south of Townsville at 1016 this morning.

Between Giru and Woodstock, communication and power assets were compromised.

All returned to normal by 1142.

gg

I think the solar flare hit Wayne Swan, he was on the radio saying don't worry he is in charge and looking after our money.LOL

It was so cloudy down here today that a bit of solar activity would have been a good thing. People were driving around with headlights on early in the afternoon, and the street lights were on by 4pm. A very overcast day that's for sure.

Some more gleaned info...

The last of the three flares occurred at 4:57 a.m. GMT on Thursday and is moving about 2,000 km per second to catch up with the first two. The solar flares were said to have caused some radio blackouts on Wednesday and Thursday, and caused some disturbance of high-frequency communications with planes traveling over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

The National Weather Service thinks the flares will case moderate to strong Geomagnetic storms on Friday.

Seems we got off lightly again. :)

"Tin hats - off!

Stand at - ease!

Dis-missed!"

:D

More announcements this morning .....
THE impact of a series of eruptions on the Sun began arriving at Earth today and could affect some communications for a day or so.

Operators of electrical grids in the United States are working to avoid outages, but the country's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says some satellite communications and Global Positioning Systems could face problems.

Over & out....

All that I can report is that it is a nice day to do the gardening.

Flare - biggest in 5 years (and growing) going to hit at 4pm today.

All electrical grids from across the world will explode and the earth will descend into chaotic hell.
