I have a SMSF and running it in retirement phase...meaning I do not pay any income or capital gains taxes. All the portfolio manager's I have looked at all seem to favour the income/capital gains tax accounting layouts, with aged sales throughout the financial years. I do not need any of the complex accounting. Their reports being tax based, seem way off the mark for my needs.
Do you know of a Portfolio Manager(paid or free) that simply:
Records Buys, Sells, Dividends.
Then is "all" I need it do do advise me what my current ownership cost/profit(loss) is per stock taking into account parcel 1,2,3 and 4 all have the same value per share, dividends paid, including Franking Credits. Maybe my current excel spreadsheet is as good as it gets for me?

Most SMSF accountants, want the data to be supplied through a standard data management protocol, so I doubt your exell spreadsheet will be acceptable. I tried that.

I ended up using BGL simple fund, then found out what accountants used the software, and used an accountant nearby.
But that isn't a recommendation, just what I did, do your own research and find what fits with you.

sptrawler, thanks for the reply.

My SMSF, of less than $1.6 Million, in pension phase, has its bank account and stock brokers trading accounts and most TD accounts already linked to the SMSF administrator( I guess like the BGL simple fund). This way, my SMSF Administrators automatically see all buy/sell actions, dividends and interest. I submit all stock distributions end of year tax inputs. I confirm I took the required pension funds to satisfy the ATO. The SMSF administrator appoints an Auditor, who do their thing. The Administrator submits the SMSF tax return. That's about it. The SMSF Administrator advises me they do not need to see any of my 'reports'.

Looking at my spreadsheet results, compared to the portfolio manager I am presently using, and my Stock Brokers profit and loss report, I usually see three very different results, as they all use different formula depending on more than one parcel purchased and if sales involved.

My spreadsheet simply indicates parcel buys and sells, plus dividends, plus franking credits to give me my 'simplified' result...see attached pic.

POR930, my personal recommendation is 'Share Trade Tracker' I've been using it for many years it's the best out there IMHO & very cost effective, it has all the bells & whistles for your accountant if you have one. (also I've had a hand in its ongoing development)

Support & service is excellent, with automatic updates you are always current with the changing environment.

Thanks for the reply Skate.
share-trade-tracker looks very interesting. Sort of like my spreadsheet on steroids. Looking at their site, I can try it for $19.00 for 1 month, then if I want to continue, change the plan to $9.00 per month on an annual plan.

Share Trade Tracker is extremely good value & the program is the 'Ducks Guts' of Portfolio Managers

Don't forget to pop into my 'Dump it here' thread I've made all my posts with you in mind.

Have a look at http://www.portfolioslicer.com.

I've been using for the past 12 months. It is quite flexible, I've modified for my own needs to allow tracking of multiple portfolios

Thanks Skate. Yeah, we are all beginners in this game. Just some of us fall into bigger holes.

Thanks for this, I will have a look...but it sounds a tad difficult for an old sod like me to get to grips with.
Possibly , this is an area where I enjoy tinkering, however I think the outcome is worthwhile

I am also looking for some sort of portfolio manager. I recently found https://www.stockportfolioorganizer.com/ but have not had much of a chance to play with it. Does anyone have any experience with it?

Skate, is the share trade tracker spreadsheet able to reduce the cost base using the tax deferred component of trust distributions? Also is it able to compute the return with dividends etc? I can't find that information on their website. Most of my trades are fairly long term so I need to deal with dividends and trust distributions fairly often.

@thomasc, Share Trade Tracker is more than a spreadsheet, it handles dividends with one push, there is no manual entry required (even through you can manually do it) auto updates with free data (subscription data is also available). The report function is extensive & has an Accountant reporting facility as well. Every entry can be overridden, modified or deleted.

Check it out, I've found no better.

I could have missed your question & if you need to ask another may I suggest using my user name as in @Skate as I will get an alert from you.
