Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary has died, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced today.

He died this morning at the age of 88.

Sir Edmund became the first person to stand on Mt Everest, the world's highest peak, on June 2, 1953 ”” the day of Queen Elizabeth's coronation.

A true adventurer.
Given the technology of the day what an amazing feat.
Few leave their mark in history.

Sir Edmund will leave his mark for centuries in the determination and efforts inspired in adventurers where ever they maybe.

2 getting very close to New Zealand now.
 
Just landed back in Perth from NZ a few hours ago, really sad to hear this news. He was a good bugger, from humble beginnings as a beekeeper to the top of the world, NZ has lost an icon.
