I'm watching Fox News and descriptions of the killing of 11 people including an 18 month old baby yesterday.

The commentators are asking "why did it happen".

Any Americans reading this need to consider that the answer is because of the gun culture which allows any halfwit to purchase a semi automatic weapon at their local gun store.

You guys need to get John Howard over there to advise you on effective gun control.

He took flak over here by his decision to limit the access to weapons by Australians.

The guy in Alabama shot these people because he had access to guns. that is the reason it happened.

One argument for the lack of gun control is the need to defend. I reckon there would have been up to a thousand guns within a square mile of the shootings and not one was used to prevent this senseless killing.

Sorry mate, Yanks don't know what a halfwit is, you've lost em already.

GG i agree too many luni's have easy access to weapons in the U.S but.........

John Howard did what for us????? effective gun control??? based on what evidence? all he did was punish law abiding firearm owners simply because a lunatic madmen went nuts with illegal *yes illegal* firearms. Today there are hundreds of shootings with automatic/semi auto rifles etc.... and yet apparently they were all banned in 1996 which was gonna *apparently* make us all safe??? typical knee jerk reaction and it was the worst $700million spent in government history.

Please dont rave on about things you know little about

It is highly unlikely given our gun control laws that a person with a murderous personality could inflict murder on so many people.

Its not impossible , but unlikely in Australia.

The Alabama massacre could happen any day any time.

Much more likely, thats my point.

Id say based on the fact that we dont have young kids going into schools killing their class mates, or office workers who are pissed off at their bosses so they decide to shoot them, some other fellow co-workers and then blow their own brains out.

Im with GG on this one.

How many massacres have we had since port Arthur and the new gun laws???

-------------

Interesting to note that the Alabama killer used an American made M-16 because
foreign made assault weapons were banned in 1996

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban

Apparently the Americans, in there wisdom believe that American assault weapons
are safer than foreign made assault weapons.

Terrible tragedy. I think it certain States within the US you can actually walk around with a gun on your person. I think the more South you go the more "relaxed" are gun regulations.

But did you read my previous post??? Martin Bryant's preferred weapon for killing was an M16 which was illegal back then so those laws made zero difference???? Im not saying the U.S laws are right as its too easy for any luni to obtain a firearm but punishing those law abiding citizens just for political gain was stupid.

Have a look at Canada's gun laws, they have a high rate of firearms per capita yet they have very small incidents.

P.S to obtain an illegal firearm today is so easy its not funny so even if you banned all guns (U.K has banned all handguns and they still have shootings with pistols) the only people left with firearms are outlaws......

Ive had this argument previously on a forum.

Martin Bryant's weapon of choice was the AR-15, this is a civilian version
of the M-16 and looks exactly the same, but has no full auto function, the
AR-15 was a legal weapon in at least 3 Australian states/territory's including
Tasmania.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15

Simple fact is that after the Howard gun laws, anyone that really needs
a gun or really wants one, or used to have one....can still have one.

I don't know a single sporting shooter or farmer that stopped shooting
after the new laws...most were happy to get the 300 bucks for there
old crappy semi autos etc...i know people that used that money to buy
new non auto rifles.

And the question remains unanswered - How many massacres have we
had since port Arthur and the new gun laws???

0 but answer me this how many shootings and people have died from weapons that are illegal??? id say close to 100 or more since 1996.

I still see no reason for removing say a pump action shotgun (which is limited to 5 shots) from a hunter but then you can have a pump action rifle???

and if you look at statistics it shows the $700million as made 0 difference in helping gun crime.

But i agree some measures needed to be taken to ensure wacko's like bryant dont get firearms over the counter without any testing.
