Share Trading Software (In General)

Hello there!

David here (Alias: Mega Rich...yeah right!)...Anyway, as a newbie to
the whole idea of Share Trading, I am wondering if any of you can recommend and I sincerely mean RECOMMEND share trading software
to me (and all the other "newbies"), that actually DOES work well in
helping to analyse and then select stocks for purchase and/or sale!

I am open to anything that does as I said "work well" and I am well
aware that many of these share trading software programs can cost
well into the thousands of dollars!

There are so many ON the market, as is shown here in the list provided
by "Shares" magazine at this link:

And this list is in NO WAY the complete list of software available!!

Now SURELY at least ONE of these "share trading programs" must work
and do a good job...surely at least ONE of them!?

So...I leave this question open now for responses...good/favourable of specific "software programs" and even NOT so favourable!

Let's be critical Guys...but let's be CONSTRUCTIVELY so!

Which ones are GOOD...in the experience of all you seriously EXPERIENCED traders out there and which ones should we...in your own opinion (and we can freely EXPRESS those opinions!)...steer clear of! Which are WORTH the money and which ARE NOT...again...in your opinion, as professional traders!!

Feel free to speak up, as you have a RIGHT to do so, a right to MAKE CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENT, even if that comment IS criticism and most importantly...you will be helping your fellow share traders to make INFORMED DECISIONS about the purchase of "Share Trading Software Programs".

It is so easy to get ripped off these days, by "shonksters" that we should
ALL be helping one another out! We are all CONSUMERS after all...we are
all, in many ways, "in the same boat", as they say!

I thank you for considering the issues I have raised in this posting!

Finally...DON'T PANIC...I won''t always be writing such lengthy postings, as I certainly do not want to "tie up the system", but sometimes such detail is necessary and in MY opinion at least...THIS is one of those times and I am
confident that MANY of you will agree with me on this point...particularly all the other "newbies" like myself!

Most of the listed software is not share "trading" software, but rather technical analysis software. In other words, it helps you analyse price charts using your own knowledge (learnt elsewhere) but doesn't automatically generate trades for you (unless you do a lot of work first to design your own mechanical trading system).

So most of that software won't do anything for you at all unless you've already studied up on technical analysis.

Seems your looking for software that has the ability to select your trades.
All you need to do is place the trade and do as the software says,Buy Hold Or Sell.
Your asking for something distinctly different to that which "Shares" Magazine lists

This is known as a BLACK BOX where you make some of the decision yourself its known as a GREY BOX.
With a Black Box you have absolutley no idea how or why the software selects a trade or rejects it.Nor do you know why it holds it or sells it.

As WAYNE has pointed out these BOXES will use technical analysis to "Find" the trade Prospects and select from programmed criteria what you should do.

As a Designer,Developer and trader of Mechanical trading methods I have spent a few enjoyable hrs at presentations of BLACK BOX software.
Im the guy the sales spruker hates!!

Most sit gummly and watch the presentation of various charts with Oscillators/Moving averages,Fibonacci Levels---Parrot droppings and or some smudged lipstick---in total AW!!

Ive seem whole rooms Bug Eyed singing Praise the Lord the holy grail is found!

They have absolutely no idea what they were looking at their desire to push a button to riches turned normal rational men and women into moronic sheep.

Normally in question time you should as I do ask!
(1) What is the methods positive expectancy?
(2) What is its normalised expected $return.
(3) What is the test period and on which markets (Is it specific to a market).
(4) What is its historical longest string of losses.
(5) What is its historical initial Drawdown.
(6) What is its Maximum Peak to Valley Drawdown.
(7) Do I have to take EVERY TRADE?

Finally. CAN YOU GUARENTEE I WILL BE CONSISTANTLY PROFITABLE following the software.

Ok there are a few fully disclosed methods.
3 I know of.

One of Mine TechTrader which is a method traded live on the net for the last 2.5 years and has returned 430% on money invested in that time (Its a Margin Lending Method) You will need Software to Run it and that of "Steves" method.
There are over 300 pages of its developement and explaination all posted on the forum I frequent and desighned it on. I have a Disk with Most of it on If you would like a copy FREE Ill send you one by Snail Mail rwi@chaiot.com.au address it TechTreder disk.

Don who posts here (Rosella) who has been trading it on the same site for the last 6 mths and has just reported a 50% return in that time.Its a Dividened trading method.

Who designed Steves Weekly Trading method and although not traded on the net I have tested the method and it is profitable---infact I developed a Weekly Method fror myself based around Steves.Youll find info on that with a seach in REEFCAP.

If anyone knows any others Id love to look at them.

Now to Stage 2

Youll need Software (analysis tools) and a Data Provider.These are "Some" of the suggestions in Shares.Infact there is only one I used(As a tester during developement) and that is BULLCHARTS.Which is realtime software which has some tremendous Features but limitations also.

Best Value Software in my veiw is AMIBROKER I dont use it but know many who do.Its Cheap (around $200) Many use it so you can get lots of support--the developer is always upgrading--blah blah.Will do MORE than you want and take (Like all software) a few Years to learn to Drive Proficiently..
Other have coded Techtrader for Amibroker and Ive heard a few other codes have been designed for Tradestation.

What do I use.
Metastock (around $900) But V7.2 as the later versions 8 and 9 are full of Bugs and like a truch to drive.You could by a version from Ebay at around $200.I use it cause thats what Ive used for 10 yrs and does all I want.

TRADESIM is linked to METASTOCK for systems developement and is in my mind arguably the best software on the market for this sort of work.Its dexterity is awsome.Has Montecarlo Analysis which is a must in my veiw.
$1500 last I heard.

MARKETCAST Live SBS feed ticker and software on my desk at the office.
One of the best live feed platforms I have seen Tick charts to 1,2,5,10,min etc Charts.Rudimentary charting package.Although I dont need it as I trade longterm an mechanically its a luxury I indulge in.
$390 setup I think it was and $148 a mth.

BULLCHARTS is the best platform from a technical and a Fundamental perspective,just awsome but no system design and test capability.If your short term discretionary tick chart trader this IS for you.Includes data feed
$890 and around $150/mth for feed.

DATAFEED.
BODHI (Just Data) stand alone in my veiw I have 7 feeds of EOD data for ASX NYSE,FTSE,PARIS,KUALA LUMPA,DAX,SINGAPORE.
ONE OF FEE for Life ($695).

I'll like to back up what tech just said re: Amibroker, I'm using it and am very impressed. It's good to use and has excellent back testing capabilities (I'm playing around with variations of the Amibroker coded version of techtrader at the moment). As comparision I've tried the demo versions of Incredible Charts and also Fcharts and I used the full (paid) version of Ezycharts for several years.

Well just to start if you don't know I actually market some stockmarket software. I won't go into that in this forum people can PM me..

The stockmarket makes you money and at the end of the day it is a game and you have to follow everything very closely. Unfortunately anyone using a software package out there where you have to all the indicators simply isn't going to work.

As long as you have a system where u can store alarms and have them sms'd to your mobile, Strategy is the main thing and if you aren't on top of all the oportunities and even the stocks that are not performing, directors investing, etc... at the end of the day you need to know so much in regards to the stockmarket.

I am proud to sell but even more grateful to use Stockcaddy free (www.stockmarket.net.au) it is everything you need in regards to the stockmarket packed into one service.

Just so everyone is aware it highlighted a breakout JRV on the 2-12-04 1.4 and if you didn't notice it made over 170%, After todays high of 4.9 we sold at 4.7.

How you all going guys, good to see ya's on the subject all round. I hear some of you's looking for Trading software to best suit there needs. I hope I can be of assistance.

David I hear your trying to find something to help Mega Rich. I'm furtunate to of came accross a Stock Market Media CD, Introduction to SHARE TRADING thats gotem all, such as those mentioned and more. Also like whats already been mentioned its all about how much your willing to pay and what technical Analyis and Charting education you may have to assist you in using the software to help you find the stock you want and to ensure its heading in the right direction, short/long term investment.

I recommend Bullcharts if your good at charting, and like the one thats
got it all when it comes down to technical Analyis and presentation. it will find that illusive/ideal/elete stock if you know how to use technical analyis. I think its a real bonner. I got it for free (as above) then i given a upgrading CD for Free. $352 per annum or $148.50 per month and so on. ASX

I recommend Star Trader if your willing to pay that bit extra for purchase, it comes with custumer service i.e Buy/Sell rego's and technical, EOD data$ 49per month, Aust, US, UK, NZ. It has a very efficient portfolio/watchlist system. Most impressive of all is its scanning potentional to find that stock,- the one too buy/ sell as you put it, and they make it look and feel so easy. I mean it really Digs-In Using CMPA, CMA, RSI, MVA- scanning past fundermendals, technical analiyis and profit testing finding EOD stocks that are definatly good to Buy/Profit. This is the software I first started trading with before I came accross Introduction to SHARE TRADING, the CD with them all. It might be the one for you,- if your willing to pay the purchase price. I paid $3800 for mine (star trader) paying it off day by day.

I recommend Incredible Charts Pro It is the one you want, for some thing that is very capable of all your needs and more. Well presented, but best of all cost effective $18 a month including the world Market (mx) I use it alot because its alot of fun, does eveverthing I need and want it to do and just like Bull Charts it charting presentation is second to none, excellent. And the research ain,t to bad ever. I like this one its one of my favourites, Cost effective!

I recommend Pro Trader Its the one you want, if your interested and appreciate Nicolas Darvas "The way he made $2000,000 in the stock market" Darvas Boxs and his methods of trading and more. I have this one updated on CD and can tell you its very impressive on line support and training comes with membership. (Paltalk) Very Very impressive technical Charting Analyis with the presentation to match Keith Watkins Schooling with membership. They will also be your stock broker, This ones a real winner without going into any detail about its format. All I know is that it works and will keep you smilling all the way to the bank. Although I have the CD(pro trader) not used it live as yet because data Costs Membership of $880 once off Fee then $55 a month for membership and EOD data. It all seems more then worfit and them sum. Congradulations Pro Trader excellent device and analyis. Check out there website. If you buy into this one let me know because if I shouted you in - I think they give out some goodies as well. Yer well prospector, Please don't be to concerned. I quess I can get a bit carryied away at times, aspecially when I think ive made a mess of some thing, such as my exsplianatory notes on the software i was introducing to this thread.

But really Bullcharts is a real purl'a, and i think its scanning utility's may be a bit to the extreme.

anyway I understand that you have been in the trading biss for a little bit now and maybe you don't need any new software seeming as you may have it all.

But have you had a look at the URL's, if so did any of them match or come up to standard with your purl's and diamond's

If you believe in both, do both.
Personally I favour the random monkey method which works well in a rising market: pick a random set of stocks and put them on a board. Ask the monkey to throw a dart at the board. Pick the stock the dart hits and invest a bit. Do this for a while and compare your results to the technical analysis and financial analysis gurus. You'd be surprised (Just in case: no: that's not how I REALLY manage my investments....)

I tried that method, but because I'm a shorter term trader, my monkey got RSI in it's shoulder and quit. Now I have to throw my own darts

Or really, well thats interesting, I think it all comes down to how much effort your are prepared to put in, and the ammount of commitment you are willing to use. I mean before you even attempt to buy any sort of software, you must have your wits about you and the appropiate ammount of education to be able to use the software correctly and to the best of your advantage. Because yer there is a hell of a lot of information out there, sum good some bad you just can't judge a book bye its cover.
Aspecially around a site such as this.You can not go to work without your education, a good example can be partly my own exsperiance to date. I started as a cheap skate and I am learning the hard way, going through all the ups and downs, and doing everthing I can to improve my fundermantal charting abilities to co-inside with Analyisis just gathering all the tricks of the trade as I go along. Finding out you cann't believe everything you see and there is still alot to learn.

I must admit that I have had the privledge of sampling sum exclusive software products,and they have helped me face the reality of trading, (don,t judge anything on face value along, learn how to research your investment and don't let it go!)
Incredible Charts pro is cheap and effective as a learning tool, all U have to do is put in the time and effort into your stadagie's learn the market and your ability's to invest. The Star Trader is a real bliss and in my view the best paper trading tool around. An excellent banking portfolio, that can profit test your investment and allow you to make long or short term investments with sum reassurance, getting the most out of every investment. Takes the hard work out of finding stocks at there greatest protential.
The only hassel with this, is to actually obtian the software. Its valued at $8000 which i find way to exspensive. I value the trader at $3000 even though it comes in a big box.

But you would be absolutly wrong by saying Share market software is all you need to trade successfully. All it is does is carry the burden.

I use the Star Trader,(Excellent) but i think for anything to be so exuberant in price, it should not only do what they do today, but should also be able to give you a full piture of where the the stock looks at being in say 3months time etc, not just where it is sitting today and where it should be. Why not put a system together that calculates all assests of it fundermentals, properties and current trading ability with the market to see where it will be in 3 months time, give or take a win or a loss? ( i think i nearly invented some thing, sssh) I meaan what exactly are they making now days and why are we so under informed of the markets true prodential. (Government) i bet.

Strangers, view to trading, i say learn how to use your charts then take it all from there!

Nothing wrong with using software to try out trading strategies, or do some paper trading I suppose; they sure do a nice job of making it look good. However imo you're heading down a dangerous path if you think past performance is a reliable predicter for the future.

What's wrong with you 2, everything you said sounds like nothin but ballicks and your both been hiding in the cupboard for all your lifes. What a load of giberis 50/50 and all the rest of it. no ones talking about tossing a coin it's not a betting situation, eithier your in our your out. Plus who died and made you professor (no'one). What the hell do you mean by all that dig.

It's bloody quite easy to manufacture a system just like today's that can calculate a stocks future within pradition. buy using well defined moving averages combined with a momentum relative strenght index, and god knows what else the average smart **** could throw in there system to record a pradictable future for a stock profiding a correct mesure of CPMA is used to get the stock of the ground and who knows what the future might hold.

I agree a stock cann't be judged by its fundermentals along, because who knows what the markets weather might have install for them the next day. But buy measuring a stocks RSI combined with thier momemtum MA who know's what you might find. and to make things more interesting, if you put that method up against the fundermendals of the markets currentcy and well being, you are bound to come up up with some interesting results.

All I'm saying is that we are being short changed to the aprocracy of filfy money mangalers, who are using thier exsperiance and wealth but not sharing the true nitty gritty of the share market.

What's so technical and profound, if you can records todays date, you can most definatly record tomorrows date what is wrong with you 2.
I don't know what type of system or software you use if any, but oviecily, you must be still stuck in the stone age or sucking the eeg out of META Stocks.
