Hypothetically, you and your partner have just turned 70 and are fit and well. The proposal is sell home and rent permanently, which on current values could cover 20+ years plus decent travelling tokens.

Just buy a cheap place a couple of hours outa Melb...travel all you want and still have all your stuff to come home to and your not burning money on rent...and the kids and your old life etc are only a short drive/bus/train trip away.

what if they find a cure for death before you die?
then what?

what will you do then?

I suppose that depends on your area and how big your house is....prob means going to a 2 bed unit to free up half the equity.

Yes youre right, I know people around that age still living in their 4 bedroom house etc worth prob 600-700k...but yes its a pretty broad hypothetical...

Dont see why you have to sell, just to travel ... at 70!

Selling the family home just to travel, seems like
a drastic move.
What will the kids inherit?

Why not take out a reverse mortgage?

Then you keep your home to come back to, and at the same time free up money to use for travel.

I should clarify the question. It is my oldies who are proposing the move and I want to keep issues of inheritance out of it (fully intend making my fortune on the stockmarket ).
Having had dealings through work with the rental market, I'm nervous about any thought that they would not have even the humblest of bolt holes to retreat to.

1. How can you cure death? The closest thing I know of is the growing of synthetic organs to EXTEND life.
2. Is a 'cure' for death even wanted? If no one is dying then what would happen?
3. I am still laughing from your post for some reason I found it quite funny (no offence intended).
4. You would work until you had plenty of money so that you could generate a substantial income from property, shares, interest etc.

(I wonder what the implications would be for our (this doesnt sound right in my head) WORLD if someone 'cured' death)

If they have enough to either live comfortably as they are now or down size or maybe do something along the lines of what Cynical said then I don't think you can beat the security and piece of mind that comes with owning your own property. In saying that it really comes down to your parents own personal preference and what they wish to do with their years. I see that theres an increasing number of retireers selling up, buying a motor home and just seeing where the road takes them!

I found a cure to death last night under my bed while I was searching for my Vintage 1995 to 2005 stamp collection.

The glory days of stamp collections.

Unfortunately for all of us though, my pet potbellied pig ate it while I was taking a Gatorade break.

Good to know

Occasionally from time to time I think about what it would be like to be old but immortal.

Occasionally and from time to time doesnt sound right, I think you need to use one or the other. Being extremely old and immortal would suck...being 23-28 and immortal would be great. Do you think if they cured death they would tell anyone largesse...if made available to everyone wouldnt we just over populate? Or would you make the creation of life (getting pregnant and giving birth) illegal?

First order on my agenda is to ban all short selling. It flies directly in the face of Efficient Market Hypothesis.

Carmen Electra knows where its at.

This went to #1 on the charts I follow.

Am I missing something? I know we got off topic but what does that have to do with anything! Please explain?
