Sydney security guard Karen Brown has been found not guilty of the murder of the man who robbed and bashed her.
Ms Brown bowed her head and sobbed as the jury of four women and eight men returned not guilty verdicts to charges of murder and manslaughter.
The 42-year-old was severely bashed when she was attacked by William Aquilina outside the Moorebank
Hotel in Sydney's south-west in July 2004.
The jury heard Ms Brown was suffering from automatism when she shot Mr Aquilina dead after he tried to steal the hotel's takings from her.
A cheer went up from Ms Brown's family and supporters when the jury returned with its verdict after less than four hours of deliberations.
Outside the court, Ms Brown thanked the jury and said that she was glad the ordeal was finally over.
the threat had been removed, she acted unlawfully and outside of the rules of use force. i wasnt there but if i understand correctly the robber was leaving in his car with the money. the money is insured and her duty now is to gather details about this criminal not be judge jury and executioner and not to give chase either. this doesnt mean i dont agree with the outcome, maybe this might deter some other scumbag from going down the same track.
