I love it how women are constantly demanding recognition on the basis of their ability or characteristics other than gender and yet they still participate in spectacles such as this.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good optic nerve at all the quality rattlers and bus passes on display, but these moronic pageants do little to overturn the adage that you looks and brains are generally mutually exclusive.
 
she now has the status of earning $10mill after finishing 3rd, 4th or whatever it was.

My dig was not at the contestants, it was at society's continued deference to slim achievement.

Koby Abberton is a B-grade celebrity in this country. There is something seriously wrong with that.

lol i remember seeing bra boys a while back mate, don't think his B grade 'celebrity' status will be updated anytime soon, for good reason

If you think an intelligent, capable and attractive young lady like Rachel Finch is less deserving of celebrity status than a thug like Abberton you've got your priorities mixed up imo.
 
Not sure how many women you've been exposed to (or if you even go for them (not that there's anything wrong with that)) but the only attribute you list which these women can lay claim to is attractive. I work around highly capable, truly intelligent good sorts and they don't have to parade around in bikinis and high heels giving idiotic answers, belittling themselves and their gender in the process. If you represent the majority and hold beauty contestents as intelligence benchmarks, then our regression as a society deeper into mediocrity is happening faster than I thought.

If you consider a bloke like Abberton to be worthy of A grade celebrity status then I find it a bit difficult to accept your claims that you

I don't know Rachel Finch from a bar of soap but from the little I've seen of her in TV segments she seems to be a pretty bright and level headed young lady.
 
Cuttlefish, I think you missed my point which was that as a society we are tending more and more to elevate slim achievers and the non-worthy, such as the minor celebrity status of a tool like Abberton. One of the last arrests I made while still in the AFP was Abberton after he spat on an air hostess and then a few weeks later I see him in the celebrity pages of magazines. That's a societal issue and something we should be worried about.

Similarly, beauty pageant contestants (while not animals like Abberton) are feted as stars when their only contribution to society is looks. I guess what I was trying to say is that it is frustrating that people who really do make a difference to the way we live are largely ignored by a burgeoning pop-culture fed by a careless media which sadly has a large influence on our children.

Unfortunately this 'endearing quality' wasn't enough to place her higher than 4th.

That reminds me of when the "Bra Boys" held a press conference to back slap with the "Comancheros" bikie gang after the Cronulla riots. What a beat up, Sunny Abberton is no dummy, taking any oppurtunity at the time to promote their movie and brand name "The Bra Boys" and their clothing line "My Brothers Keeper".
