In ten days time the (relatively) new wife and I will be taking 3 months off and completing one of our life goals of travelling, and a little volunteering, through South America. Wifey has already quit her job and is busy packing up and selling all our furniture, and i am busy preparing my clients for my absence.

Three months will be by far the longest single block of time off we have taken together and we are looking forward to all the experiences (and challenges) that are coming up

As such I wont be around on ASF much as of the end of Feb but anyone interested can subscribe or keep track of us on our blog here...
 

I for one, prawn, will miss your even handed Pisa-like moderation.

All jokes apart, enjoy the break, it sounds like a great trip. Stay safe and well, both of you.

Have a great trip prawn, a couple of my mates have done the South America thing. The one bit of advise they give is, keep a spare credit card in you jocks.
You will get robbed, comes with the territory. LOL
At least over there they rob you to your face, here the government rob you.

All jokes aside they both loved the trip, enjoy youselves.

Good luck make sure you take some Anti Bio's as there are lot of genuine fake pill around and SAVLON as it is hard to buy.
If you get an infection break open a capsule and tip some of the powder on the wound.
Take Gillard, swam, Hockey,Abbot et al as well please.
Come back still married to a new world.

Yeh we wont be surprised if it does happen, but i know others who have spent a couple months over there and not got done, so it just depends i guess

Good luck with that. My sister did volunteering in Peru a few years ago and loved it.

I've traveled for 6 months in South America and only felt unsafe once, staying at a hotel near Lima airport. Just take the usual precautions and you'll be fine. If you can speak even basic Spanish you'll be in a much better position.

Spanish is surprisingly easy to pick up. If you know a couple of specific rules of the language then what you read is what you say.

Yeh we can speak the very basics. "How much, Where is it?, I want a beer, Take me here" etc etc Reading it is easy i just dont know what all the words mean when i read them

Probably helps that I had a grandmother who spoke Spanish to me. Then again, being able to ask for custard and jelly in Spanish isn't very useful after you turn 7!

Couple of little rules (these aren't set in stone) but many words in English that end in "ity" are the same in Spanish but end in "dad". Also, words that end in "ion" often end in "cion" in Spanish. They're the two most noticeable patterns, IMHO. Spanish is much more similar to French than to Italian, which does make it historically closer to English than you might think.

Either way, struggling with the language is one of the joys of travel.
 
Don't worry about us, Prawn; the Market will still be operating when you return.
And as 3 months will be over in a flash, do take lots of photos and keep a travel diary. In years to come, you won't otherwise remember the details the way your wife does.

Seriously - do enjoy yourselves and come back with recharged batteries and full of exciting memories.

PS: When you get to Argentina, it's best to introduce yourselves as Australians, maybe show the Southern Cross, but keep the Union Jack covered up. Poms aren't very popular in the region.
 
Have a great trip Prawn. My wife and I did the same thing in 2010 before we had our baby. The best life planing we've ever done.

My top 3 places for South America.
- Galapogas Islands - holiday in a wildlife documentary
- Tour the Hourani tribe (Equador) - it's real life Avatar stuff
- Iguazu Falls - no other waterfall is worth visiting after this
