Overwhelmed by choice

I've been searching for a pair of binoculars to replace my crappy Tasco's which I bought many years ago.

Damn, there is just so much. I've looked at, and through, Swarovski, Lieca, Carl Seisse, Bushnell, Gerber, Pentax and a plethora of others at various price points.

Finally settled on and bought Nikon Monarch 5 10x42 but, by heck, it was a hard slog getting to what I could afford and suited the purpose. Almost as difficult as buying a pair of socks or, , accompanying one of my daughters when they wish to go shopping.

The corporations claim we want choice, so they give us so much choice it's nearly debilitating.

Bit like going to a cafe and they have a 100 items on the menu, while my local pub has about 15 including the daily special.

I know which one lets us order quicker

Reminds me of the hurt locker when our "hero" is standing in the cereal isle of the supermarket, next thing he's heading back for another tour.

I think you made a good choice , I have many years in the Optical game in one form or another. Lenses and the coatings and optical precision are most important. Many cheap lenses will have poor coatings that break down and some aberrations in the lense ( blurry spot or wrong power axis ect ). The best lenses have always come from Japan ( Nikon , Hoya, Sigma , Pentax ) or Germany ( Carl Zeiss , Leica ) . If it was me I would go for the Japanese.

It was a bit of whimsy on my part. Usually, I initiate the shopping. They can afford it themselves but it allows me to indulge my daughters and they know it. Only a couple of times a year and the cost ends up being just a couple of hundred. But do they shop! Blokes walk in, spot what they want, maybe try it on, pay and walk out. Done and dusted in 30 minutes or less. The ladies? Last time over 4 and a half hours involving five items. Sheeze but it's fun.

Thanks. I needed a reasonably lightweight, weather resistant unit with sufficient power and suitable for spectacles to take to the football. These binos seem to fit the bill. Cost was less than $500, so it wasn't too bad on the pocket.
